Hey gang, I'm new here

Recommended Posts

Just found this site, and am excited. I live in Las Vegas and happily married, 35, and have so much to love and live for.

After 10 years of trying we finally (with no help) got pregnant. We have two awesome little girls, ages 1 and 2. During my pregnancy I got gestational diabetes, and after the first baby it stayed. I am devastated by this, and decided on my own to stop taking my insulin. It has been a couple of months.. I guess I am in denial. I am a smart person that is on her second degree, studies include business law etc. I am well traveled and yet I feel like a dummy.

I think my after I knew my daughters were safe and healthy, I feel like I am in the clear so to speak. Last year I looked into Gastric and the Lapband. I did all my work, pshyce evaluation, nutritionist, EKG, blood work...unbelieveably enough the idiot doctor's office I was seeing knew I was approved but did not bother to mention that their office was not on the Center of Excellence list. I had about 5 weeks to scramble and see where I could go, as I was approved. Time ticked away, and noone could do the surgery in such a hurry. Now my new insurance wants years of appointments and documentation even though I already was approved.

My current place is that I am thinking of going to Dr. Ariel Ortiz and paying cash. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am happy to be here and talk to all of you....

Gambling nights in vegas...

Sorry to hear you've had quite a time. I had my own experience with the insurance company. Anyway, Dr.Atkinson in Vegas is wonderful. However, I think he charges around 16,000+ for the lapband. He performed my mom's RNY a few yrs. back. I am now a self-pay pt. and simply could not afford that much. So...Dr. Kirshenbaum in Aurora, CO is doing my surgery (10/1). His charge is $9950 and is all inclusive. He will do a consultation via the phone if need be. If you are interested the site is lapbandrockies.com Good luck!!

Shelbymooy...I can't help you with a surgeon etc but may I ask you to reconsider taking your insulin? You are putting yourself at great risk by NOT taking it and your little kiddos need you around. I live in San Antonio and am a nursing student. We have epidemic Diabetes type II here and I've seen so many amputated limbs or dialysis patients because they didn't manage their disease....

It's your life and body and I don't mean to be presumptuous. Just think of who you are risking by NOT taking care of the disease...it isn't just you it will hurt.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
