Feels Like I Swallowed a Golf Ball

Recommended Posts

Ok, Im sure this question has been asked before but...

I had my surgery in Mexico a few days ago and ever since I had the Lap Band put in I have been in alot of pain. Not port pain or shoulder/gas pain, but internal pain. I have been burping alot since the surgery and every time I am about to burp it feels like I swallowed a golf ball and it is stuck somewhere inside me. It feels like I am trying to get that golf ball through the band and it gets momentarily stuck. I feel like this whenevr I try to swallow Water, and the pain comes and goes every few minutes for apparently no reason. It is SO painful, it stops me in my tracks. Is this kind of pain normal?

I know I should call the doctor, but I dont want to bother him if this is a normal part of the healing process. Also, even if he asked me to come back down to Mexico to check it out I would not have the money to fly back there so Im kind of screwed.

If you aren't taking your pain meds like you should then I would recommend that you take them around the clock until the pain goes away. It will aid in the healing process.

Are you sipping Clear liquids only? Make sure you aren't gulping your fluids.

It hurt when I sipped Water for the first 3 or 4 days but I think that's because I had a hiatal hernia repair. I never experience anything like a golf ball trying to get through the band. Now that I'm on solids I have felt a pressure in the esphogus when I've eaten meat too fast or haven't chewed it very well.

Lastly, I would call the doctor if your pain level is really bad.

Hi, my symptoms were similar due to the swelling but went away in about a week.

Did you get any saline in your band at the time of surgery?

If you did maybe you got too much.

I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time. I never felt anything like that. I would suggest if it keeps up, call the Dr. You might not havve to go back to Mexico....if you tell them you don't have the $ to go back now, maybe they can suggest a local Dr. for you. Good luck to you.

I experienced the same discomfort and my doctor told me it was just from swelling. To me it felt like awful heart burn and a lump.... I just walked around alot when I got this feeling and it helped a little bit. Also, I would force burps out which helped even more. Give it time and I bet in couple of days you will feel alot better.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
