Still waiting on surgery date...

Recommended Posts

But always looking for new info, I found this site through an internet friend on another site.

I am from northeastern PA and have been overweight all of my adult life. I started gaining in puberty and just basically never stopped. I have never been an extreme dieter, but have done all of the healthy, medically approved things and they have never worked for me. I have 2 children, a 4 year old girl (on the 27th) and an almost 2 year old boy. I nursed both - my daughter 21 months and my son is still nursing once a day. I enjoyed it thoroughly, BUT gained weight during both while nursing. I lost all pregnancy weight only to slowly put 20-25 lbs back on while nursing. I have gained 50 lbs since we started our family and am now over 150 lbs overweight. My doctors have decided this is the last resort that will work for me.

I had my first consult in late June and have my next one coming up on the 21st of this month. With the help of Metformin, I have lost 12 lbs already (from my highest and initial consult weight) and hope to keep losing some before the surgery as I have to lose 10% for insurance purposes anyways. If I get that low, that will put me closer to 140 to lose to be healthy in my eyes. I want to do this for myself and also for my children.

My husband and I plan on at least 2 more children and I figure with my history of gaining weight while nursing, Lap Band is the safest route to go so that if it SHOULD happen again, I can get a fill to help me lose the weight at that point. Whereas with the RNY you are more on your own if that happens.

I am kind of nervous/anxious/excited/scared of everything to come, but am looking forward to a new start. I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't 2nd guess my choice and there is still 4 months or more to go to look forward to more of that! I just hope my mind doesn't make any bad decisions for me!

I am just hoping to get more info and see how people with the lap band are living their lives on a day-to-day basis and how I can best prepare for my own post-op life.

Lynn

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
