Hi, My name is Mike or Big Mike to most people. I have been getting ready for the lap band procedure for the past six months. My banding date is on Aug. 26th I am very nervous. I have been on a 1200 calorie diet for the past month and I have lost 31 pounds so far I like it, but the thing that keeps popping through my mind is, if I can lose 31 pounds dieting is this the right thing for me? I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I have done all the diets... weight watchers, slim fast counting calories. you name it I've probably done it. I joined this forum to make sure I am doing the right thing, and also to talk to other people in the same situation. So if you have any advice or would like to talk don't hesistate to drop me a line or say hi. More than happy to talk to anybody. Mainly I hope I meet a lot of people that are in the same situation or have already gone through it, to get great advice.

looking forward to talking with everybody.

Take care.

Mike:cool2:

hi Mike, welcome to LBT...

i guess my first question to you is ... how many times have you lost those 31 pounds and kept them off??

that's the beauty of the band... it is a truly fabulous tool that not only helps you lose, it will help you maintain.

best of luck to you.

Losing just hit the nail on the head. Most if not all of us are here because our weights yo yo'd and we never kept the weight off.

I lost 52 pounds 2 years ago on my own and then started eating again..

Welcome Big Mike! Or, maybe now we will be calling you 'Not so Big Mike' ...

This is an extremely personal choice for everyone and I think that you said a few key words in your post that struck a cord with me. You said that you've struggled your whole life with your weight and you have tried every diet under the sun. I too have tried diets and I can loose weight as well, but it ALWAYS seems to creep back up. Two weeks before I was badned was the heavist I've been EVER. I did loose 12 pounds on the pre-op diet. That was my deciding factor. Getting this weight under control once and for all!! I need to be healthy for ME, my fiancee and for my family. I want to be sure I'm around for a long, long time to come!!! :tongue_smilie: I'm not even a mommy yet, which is another reason I chose the band...

I see that you posted your age, and your 21 years old. I am 33 now and let me tell you, I wish I would have done this 10 years ago instead of the yo-yo, up and down, out of control spiral that my weight has been... I'm only sorry that I didn't do it sooner.

I am down 20 pounds now and I go for my first adjustment this afternoon at 4pm and I'm SO excited!!!

Good luck to you Mike in your journey and please, keep posting and reading on our forum!!! You can retain so much wonderful information.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Mike,

I'm new like you and I am not banded yet either. I am just beginning the process of getting a surgeon so it will months before I get there. I know exactly what you are saying because I feel the same way. But these folks are right. I'm like you. I've been overweight all of my life and I have lost and gained and lost gained over and over. I have a whole wardrobe of clothes of different sizes to show for it.

I've never experienced life as a fit and healthy person. I don't even care about the beauty side of it. I just want to be healthy and be able to physically do things that being overweight prevents me from doing now. Good luck and let me know what it's like!

Big Mike, you will soon be Half Mike!

I am just going to back up what everybody else just told you: You are losing that 30 lbs for the last time! I, like you, and most others on the forum have lost the same pounds too many times and we usually gain that back plus more! You are lucky to be seriously looking at this at such a young age. I wish I could take back the past 16 years and have do overs at a healthy weight!

Good luck on your venture!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
