Candidate for tummy tuck after 2 hernia surgeries?

Recommended Posts

I am considering a Tummy Tuck. Do you think i would be a good candidate if i have had two hernia surgeries in the last 5 years (umbilical and incisional hernia)? The incisional hernia was caused by an old gall bladder surgery over 18 years ago. Is it possible that i will continue to get these hernias because of the fat/bulge in my stomach area? I look like i am about 6 months pregnant and want to get rid of this by exercising but cant b/c of the incisions in my stomach area, it is quite difficult trying to pull myself up. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Consider consulting with a plastic surgeon.

I went for my consult when I was 25 pounds away from goal, I am getting TT next week and will be about 7 pounds from goal. I met with 2 surgeons, and found one I was comfortable with.

While this is a great forum for insights and sharing experiences, I would think that only a doctor who has your medical history can answer this for you.

The hernias are usually not a probem but I get a CT scan on my preop patients who've had them. Sometimes we find another one or a recurrence !

Im board ceertified in general and plastic surgery so Im comfortable fixing most of them but each PS differs on this.

thanks for the reply Dr.Lo. I did call your office to schedule an appointment and was told to wait until i lose weigh b/c of the top bulge located in my stomach area, which i believe comes from my two surgeries, not sure if it scar tissue or what...i am not a specialist but thats what i believe. The person did not tell me NOT to come, but said that i would get better results if i lose in that area before getting the Tummy Tuck. I also believe that my stomach muscles are severed to no return b/c of my surgeries. Not sure what to do or which direction to go. If i could lose the weigh in my stomach area, i would be able to do so much. But, i am just praying that i do not get any more hernias in that area.:smile2:

If i send u a pic, would you be able to tell me if a tummy tuck will help me?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
