Well, I had my Nutrition class yesterday (Aug 13th) and had all my pre-op done. Guess what, I started getting a bad headache and sore throat yesterday too. I wake up this morning and still have a sore throat but no headache. The N.P. at the surgeons office thinks that it is just my allergies and I sure hope she is right. If my throat isn't any better but this afternoon, I'm calling my family doctors office and making an appointment to make sure it is not anything other than my allergies.

Ha! OMG the same exact thing happened to me right before my surgery!! Have you been on a liquid pre-op diet?

If so what you are expierencing is more than likly KETOSIS (key toe sis). My Primary care had no idea what it was she thought I had mono and freaked me out. I even had white bumps on my tonsils like you would get being sick.

But after finding out I had nothing and some research it turns out my body was in major ketosis.

You will be fine! I had surgery on June 11th and its the best decision I have ever made in my 32 years!!!

Keep us posted!

You know, I keep reading about all these people being on a liquid diet before the surgery but my doctor didn't put me on why. Makes me wonder why he didn't. So, no, it isnt ketosis i think it is just my allergies.

The same thing happened to me. My surgery was scheduled for the Friday and I woke up Monday with sore throat and very congested sinuses. Since I had a bad experience with the whole pre certification period with my insurance and the coordinator from the doctor's office, I vowed nothing was going to stop me, not even a little cold. I made an appointment with my family doctor and he loaded me up with antibiotics and gave me 2 shots. Needless to say, I was good to go come the morning of my surgery. (July 25, 2008).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
