Post Op diet advice required

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that some are allowed to but my nutritionist said no (no product that says meal replacement). It would be best to check with your doctor. I was allowed Atkins shakes and I stuck with that along with chicken broth and Protein powders.< /p>

Please can you tell me whether it is okay to drink "slimfast" meal replacement drinks when you are on the Fluid only regimen. I am on this regimen for two weeks, and obviously i need more than Water. I would appreciate your help

Your doctor should have told you what you can and can not have.

I would call them and find out if its ok.

I did not have to do the 2 week liqiud diet prior to surgery. But my sister is doing it now and they have her drinking 6 slimfasts a day plus Water.< /p>

She is only allowed to have the high protien and low carb slim fasts. She is not allowed to have the slim fast optima. Do not know why but thats what they told her.

Honeslty though you really should call your doctor they will tell you what protien shakes to drink. they would never put you on just water for 2 weeks.

good luck and let us know how you do and what they told you.

I thought Slim Fast Optima was the low carb...they have so many different choices now it is confusing! Anyway, I was told that Slim Fast and other products labeled as "meal replacement" were too high in sugar, even the low carb version of Slim Fast, whatever that may be.

HAHAH I am a twit. I thought you meant a pre op diet. DUH on me.

Anyway.

For the 2 weeks liquids it depends on what your doctors says.

For the first 4 days i was told to be on Clear Liquids. the for the rest of the 2 weeks i was told full liquids.then 2 weeks of muchy foods 2 weeks soft food then go on to regualr food. Every doctor is different though

Clear I did chicken and beef broth and i got some fruit protien shots from GNC.

Full liquids I did tomatoe Soup cream Soups put threw a blender to make them smooth.

Honestly you should have received a book with a diet to follow.

If you do have question call your doctors office that is what they are there for

Slimfast products just have too much sugar. There are Protein supplement products out there that are so much better! Drinking Slimfast is like buying an expensive car and putting in the lowest grade of gas.

Slim-Fast is not the best option because it is high in sugar/carbs. However, I did use the Optima brand occasionally because it is just so available and easy to find.

A better option would be to find high Protein and low carb shakes regardless of the brand.

It seems all the nutritionists think that you should avoid sugary, high calorie drinks just on principle. I'm not doing the artificial sweetener thing anymore, so I had to drink real juices and Protein Drinks with calories during my post-op liquid phase. I figure this is a time for healing, not starving.

Thank you all for your advice. As i live in Teneriffe, Spain, the surgeon is not familiar with "slim fast" drinks, although they are available in speciaist English shops. However, I have taken all your advice on board, and have decided to have these drinks, but to limit the amount I have.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
