post-op workout problems

Recommended Posts

Ok, this my problem. I was banded on the 23rd. Of July and I have been on many diets and weight loss plans in my life. I am still well over 300lbs and have been that way for awhile. My problem is, I have lost 40- 50lbs before by watching what I eat and exercising 5 to 6 days a week. After working out that hard I have always seemed to hurt myself and injured my foot, knees and hips. I have been told this is because of my weight and injures I accrued in the military. How can I loss the weight at a good pace so to one day be able to workout again? I see a lot of people here saying they workout 5 days a week. I have no access to a pool which would make thing much easier. I do walk now but usually take the next day off to recover because I don’t want to hurt myself and end up failing again. Have many of you been able to loss a lot of weight without really being able to workout? I really want this to work but don’t want to get hurt and end up on my butt or back again and not being able to move.:D

Hi,

I am still waiting to for my banding next month bt I am no stranger to working out and injuries. Let's think.....how comfortable are you on a stationary bike? I know my butt hurts aftr 20 minutes or so, but it is a good cardio/fat burning exercise. Resistance bands could help. Do you belong to a gym? Is it possible to get a membership at a YMCA or something? They usually have some pretty good programs to help you find a way to work out without injuring yourself. Good Luck!

I understand comopletely.....when I started wls, I could hardly walk, much less exercise. After about 50 lbs I could pull myself up on the treadmill.

The best thing I found the first year or so was a video that was made specifically for weight loss patients......it uses exercise bands (which come with it), and the first stage of the video is exercises from a chair, and it progresses from there. It's called

"Weigh2Win".....I got mine from www.bariatriceating.com.

i can appreciate this, i have some college sports injuries that may have contributed to the spinal arthritis i now have or just a family trait (mom has RA). regardless, the weight was an issue on my joints....i started walking the day of surgery and never stopped. 2 months after being banded i joined a gym, and added the elliptical to the walking (less impact), shortly after that i got a trainer and re-engaged with weight training. i didn't lose a bunch at that point (25lbs or so), but it was some relief and made it easier to add more exercise as i went along.

don't get me wrong - there are days that my back or hip hurts, and i just take it a bit easier that day.

start slow & go from there, i actually feel worse on days i'm not so active - so the exercise i know has helped...good luck to you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
