My nutritionist said to drink prune juice (assuming that you are on liquids or even if you're on solid food.) Also try some Metamucil/fiber supplement. I got Equate (Walmart brand) "Fiber Therapy", it is 100% natural Psyllium Husk Fiber, bulk forming laxative and dietary supplement. I'm not sure if you are supposed to take them in pill form, so I also have Metamucil powder form that you add to Water to drink (I got the orange flavor). These things worked for me. :wink2: Good luck!

I was told to go for the stimulant free products so I use Milk of Magnesia when it is really bad. There are also the glycerine suppositories that help so you don't have to strain so hard. Like getthin suggested, if you are not taking fiber supplements you should do so now it should help you to avoid the problem in the future.

No gross out I think we have all been threw it.

Anyway to get relief i would use Milk of Magnesia or ex lax. The I would start using a fiber supplement to help with this so it does not happen again.

i personally use fibersure it has 5 mg of fiber in a teaspoon and you just mix it in with Water or juice what ever you want and it doe not taste like anything.

I also get Special K protien Water. it has 5 mg of protien and 5 mg of fiber.

Hope this helps

For immediate relief, you could try something like Milk of Magnesium, but perhaps you need to add a stool softener to your daily intake, such as Colace. Taking fiber supplements are a good idea but only if you are taking in plenty of fluids on a regular basis. If you don't take enough Water in (or other liquids), you will only end up making the problem worse. Your body needs the liquids to help move the fiber through, but if you don't take enough in, you are just making a brick of fiber in your gut, which could cause a tear in your colon when you are trying to push it out.

Your best bet for long term, is to get a stool softener, especially if you are straining a lot, which can cause hemorroids or changes in your heart rate and blood pressure. Also like another poster said, add prune juice, prunes, or other raw vegetables.

Make sure you are moving a lot too. Lack of activity can cause Constipation since we aren't moving well after surgery and taking narcotic pain medications is another big cause of constipation. Just don't take laxatives for long periods of time because you will then become dependent on them, making the problem worse.

Good luck with finding a solution. I know exactly how you feel. I went the first three weeks without a BM and felt terrible.

My doctors office suggests 1 T. of mineral oil daily for the first month post-op. You can use up to 3 T. daily. It lubricates your insides and makes things easier to pass. It's about $4-$5 for a bottle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
