Which surgeon did you choose?

Recommended Posts

Dr. Kurian did my surgery. She is terrifc. From everything I've read, all three are top notch. I think you might have a longer wait for Fielding and Ren. Also, each one accepts different insurance, so you may not really have a choice unless you are self-pay. I met with the nutritionist, the nurse and Dr. Kurian on the same day. (I think you have to make a separate appt to meet the surgeon if you plan to have Ren or Fielding do the surgery). I met with Dr. Kurian mid -May and my surgery date was July 1, 2008. I think 6 weeks is typical. I will say that the process for insurance approval is a stressful as my paperwork was submitted less than one week before my surgery date even though the paperwork was complete several weeks earlier. The person who does the insurance approvals is overworked and can be short. I found email was the best way to reach her. Hope this helps. Good luck to you.

Thank you Wendy, that was very informative. I'm still far away from getting a date and all that, but could you tell me the name and email of the person I need to contact when my papers are submitted? That could save me a few weeks. (I'm desperate to get banded already.)

Also, is it allowed to schedule my consultation if I haven;t met the nutritionist yet? I'm probably going to go with Dr. Fielding.

Thanks again, your reply was very helpful.

Hi:

You can get all your visits scheduled on the same day. They do try to do so if possible and yes, you have a longer wait for Drs. Fielding and Ren-Fielding. Nilsa is Dr. Kurian's patient coordinator and Asia is Dr. Ren's. Nilsa is extremely overworked but competent. Asia is sweet and helpful but she is new and not as seasoned as Nilsa.

Wsw27 - thanks for that tidbit of information. I'm meeting with Dr. Kurian in a little over a week, but I have no idea if she's the one who accepts my insurance. I'll have to give the office a call and see.

I didn't like my impression of Dr. Kurian the first time I saw her at the seminar. I also didn't care for some of the speakers. If my Primary care doctor wasn't so confident in NYU, I probably would have looked elsewhere. Then when he did the referral, I didn't even need one for my insurance, he listed Dr. Ren. So I stuck with her.

I am so happy with her and my after care that I would do it all over again.

I decided to go with Dr Fielding since my workmate who did the sugery told me that I would like his personality and she was right. My husband is doing it with Dr. Ren and he is happy with his choice. I am having my surgery a whole month earlier then him basically since he has medical things that I don't have to worry about. Like he has a cut that has to heal and he has to go for the sleep study. I can't wait till my surgery!!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
