So, I've been on the board for a while, but I'm confused about initial weight loss. It sounds like many people don't lose very much right after surgery, but aren't consuming many calories. Can anyone explain this. I would think that being on the liquid and mushies diet would make you lose a lot initially and then you would taper off...

That was not my experience at all. Of course, everyone is different. I lost 18 pounds the first 2 weeks. Once I started eating a little more mushies, I gained a few of those pounds back. My body was in shock from the rapid weight loss I think. After a couple of weeks, I started losing pretty steadily again. I hit another plateau after losing about 45 pounds, and it took about 3 to 4 weeks for the weight loss to pick up again. But, it has!

I dont know but I am upset about it.. I have not lost any weight in 10 days Im not even 4 weeks post op and have only lost 10 pounds the other 10 was before surgery. I write down all my calories.. max I have 600 a day and I exercise between 30mins to 1 hour a day... So I cant explain it but I know i dont like it or understand how thats possible :)

I'm wondering if your exercise is the same level as before surgery? Also, can you tell if you are losing inches?

no Im didnt exercise before the surgery for 6 months because I was dealing with trying to get approved through the ins. I havnt measured to see if I am loosing inches. I know Im getting smaller because my clothes are more loose..I dont understand If Im burning more calories than I am consuming even if I am gaining muscle I think I should be loosing something.

Maybe you are not eating enough. You need to get all the Protein in about 70 grams per day. Try to increase your calories to about 900. This also happened to me and then more weight came off after about 2 weeks. I havent had a fill yet either and have lost 29 lbs since june 13th. I am also walking 30 minutes twice a day. I do not eat very many carbs. I eat protein, yogurt, cottage cheese and cheese. Very little carbs at all. Maybe 20 grams.

This phase is frustrating. I am just under 4 weeks banded. Had no pre-op diet. I've lost 20 pounds since surgery, but 15 of those were the first week. I am struggling to lose even a pound a week at this point. I have no restriction whatsoever. I haven't really tried, but I think I could eat a whole big plate of food--like a cheeseburger or something. I have not felt full one single time. I can't get my first fill for two more weeks. Please tell me this is normal. I'm starting to think that I'm some clinical study and that I got the placebo band. HaHa.

penturn, you are doing great! 20 pounds in 4 weeks is amazing. You likely would not have been able to do that without the surgery. I know it's frustrating at times, and you will definitely hit different plateaus (especially before your fills), but then you will keep losing. They say a pound a week is considered successful. You are well ahead of that. Hang in there!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
