One year anniversary

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone in the August 2007 board! Since this is your anniversary month, I was wondering if you have any advice to offer a pre-op like myself?

What worked for you , what didn't, what you would do differently, what you wish you would have known, etc.

Thanks, and happy anniversary!

I would only say that you should not put too much pressure on yourself and not to compare yourself to other people on this board! Also, get your fills frequently - that is the key to sucess! Best of luck.

Hi Snapplegirl,

Thanks!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with what Karen G says about avoiding making comparisons and staying on top of your fills. In addition to that here are my three basic keys to sucess:

1) Fills under fluoro always.

2) Track everything you put in your mouth. I started out using Fit Day and currently use Daily Plate. I try to stay right around 1000 calories, but I'm not going to drive myself crazy trying to achieve perfection, so some days it might be closer to 1500.

3) Exercise and lots of it.

Hope this helps and good luck on your journey!!!!

Thank you! It's been a very good year!

What worked for me?: Learning how the band works IN ME. I've learned over the course of this year that FOR ME my signal it's time for a fill is when I find myself grazing between meals. With the band properly restricted, one meal lasts til the next. So, if I find myself back in the kitchen before bedtime -- uh-oh -- time to go in for a fill.

What didn't?: Thinking I still needed to plot and chart everything. It made me very frustrated because I don't lose steadily. I hit a new number, sit there for about a month, then drop 5-10 lbs in a matter of a day or two, only to sit that that NEW number for a month. (shrug) That's just the way my body works and seemingly there isn't much I can do to speed it up.

What I would do differently?: I'd be more diligent on the exercise. I'm exercising more than ever before, but still not consistent enough with it.

What I wish I had known?: Not to buy too many clothes too fast -- because some things I only wore once or twice before they were too big. :wink2: Only buy things you can barely fasten, because if it fits right now, it'll be too big in a month.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
