Scorpio81 2 Posted October 8, 2008 Wow! I am so glad I found this thread on here. Long story short, I have my consult coming up (already done the seminar and already have ins. approval). When I called today the woman in the office really made me think.... I am seriously considering RNY instead of LB. I have (at least) 125 lbs to lose, and considering the statistics of the LB, I think the RNY might be the way to go. I worry about the 'dumping' and other complications the most. But, in the end, I just want to be healthy for my daughter so that I can live to see her grow up. Thanks so much for all this info on here. I will be checking back all the time to see how you are all doing and get any advice you are willing to give!

But even the band has its potential complications. Make sure you discuss everything with your physician and you are comfortable with the decision you make. Good Luck and keep us posted! Jaculin412 0 Posted October 13, 2008 Wow I am so happy I came across this thread. I had my surgical consult in July, I was dead set against the RNY because of how much more invasive it is compared to the band. I have been doing my six month monitored by my PCP and have a November 24th surgery date for the lap band. WELL.... I went this morning for two required tests, the upper GI and an esophageal manometry. AFter the tests, my gastro doc told me there may be an issue for me with the band and that I should discuss the RNY with my surgeon. So it looks like I may be going for the RNY instead. I was glad to come across this thread and read all the posts, very interesting. So everyone is happy with the RNY? Surgery went well? Recovery went well? Any negatives?? Thanks all!!! Hello fellow soon-to-be RNYers!:w00t: I had RNY on 10/14. I stayed in the hosptial for 2 days. The surgery went well and I was able to start taking liquids 24 hours post op. That was hard, as my throat was SOOO dry. They had me on a morphine pump, which was very nice:wink2:. I had no complications and came home on the 16th. The only negative is the gas pain, which is expected. They have to inject gas into your stomach after they finish to make sure there are no open areas or fistulas. The gas pain is very tough, but walking and taking gas X works well. When I arrived home I weighed 275! I was so discourgaged, but I knew it was Water weight. I weighed today and I am 259. With the exception of the gas, there is no pain. I wish you well!
GramaLisa 0 Posted November 7, 2008 Hi Everyone, I got approved for GB last week! I have a half-day class tomorrow for pre-op. The class is supposed to help us know what to expect and get prepared for surgery. I don't know how long until my surgery is though . Lisa
Bimbabe 1 Posted November 7, 2008 Hi GramaLisa, Good luck! I am 3 weeks out and doing well. I have lost 28lbs, and I feel wonderful. If you have any questions, just ask! I will be glad to help and support you!:frown:
GramaLisa 0 Posted November 12, 2008 I got my surgery date! I am scheduled to have my surgery on January 8, 2009. It kind of sucks for me because that's right before I am due to go back to work after our Winter Break. I work as a transportation Aide for an autistic girl. I begged and pleaded for an earlier date but no go! I don't know what I am more afraid of, asking my boss for the time off, or how my "autie" is going to react to my being gone for two weeks or more. Do you think I can get by with only taking two weeks off? I work 4 and a half hours per day, a split shift, and I am mostly just sitting on a bus. A bus driver who had GB in June seems to think that I will be ready to go back to work in only two weeks, if there are no complications. I wanted to ask about your post-op diet. After the initial healing period and pureed food stages are over the nurse at the meeting said we are only allowed to eat meat, cheese, eggs, and cottage cheese! She said we cannot have anything else until we lose 75% of our excess weight. This seems a bit limited to me. Not even a salad or veggie until we lose that weight. Personally, I like a nice green salad with dinner. That pre-op diet doesn't sound like one a person could stay on long to me. Is your diet that boring? Thanks! Bimbabe 1 Posted November 12, 2008 Hi GrammaLisa! Congratualtions on your date! You should be fine with returning to work after 2 weeks. The worst part are the gas pains that lasted about 6 days for me. Walking and gasX really did help. As far as your post-op diet, WOW! That does sound really restrictive. I had to have liquids for 3 weeks, now I am on the mushies until the 25th of November, just in time for Thanksgiving! After that, I have 6 small meals per day. I cannot have salads until 3 months out. Maybe they are really into getting dramatic results, which you will on that diet. If you are not able to have fruits and veggies, I strongly suggest you check to make sure you can use metamucil ( I take the non-gritty kind, 2 TBSPS once per day). I had trouble with Constipation until I started doing that. Don't worry about being hungry, you will find you have to REMIND yourself to eat:blink:! You will be able to follow their diet, but just ask about having some soft fruits and veggies, see what they say. Head hunger is another thing:cursing:, which you can work through, by recognizing it. Don't worry, you will soon discover what I mean by that. I am a salad lover and cannot wait until 01/14/09, I will Celebrate by having a small salad. You will find yourself thirsty as well, and as you know Water is fine. Let me know if you have any other questions. Sue
MacMadame 81 Posted November 12, 2008 The nurse sounds like a nut case. My surgeon is really strick about carbs when you are losing and I'm still allowed to have up to 40 g a day. He wants us to eat leafy green veggies, too, so we don't even have to count them in our carbs for the day, if we don't want to. They have found that a low carb diet really works better for getting to goal than not watching carbs, but low carbs isn't NO carbs.
