Recommended Posts

Well it's almost hear and I don't know what to expect. I want to go out tonight and have a last meal, but no luck just liquid. August 11th at 7:30 am is the surgery, then what? Can anyone tell me what to expect after that? How will I feel? Can you feel the band or the port? Any advice on food? Sorry for the rambling. :confused2:

I was banded at 7am Augtust 4th and feel great. When you wake up from the anesthesia you will be a little groggy, but the nurses will get you up soon and have you walk. Then they will take you to have a barium x-ray to make sure everything looks good on the inside. I went back to my recovery cubicle, and after my Dr. came by at noon, went home. I had the anti-nausea patch behind my ear, an anti-nausea drug and Pepsid in my IV before surgery, and had no nausea at all. I went home with liquid pain killer and anti-nausea suppositories, but only took the pain liquid once. I've had some soreness, some gas pains in my left shoulder, and some diarreah, but feel better everyday! I have pressed around and can barely feel my port. I think having a positive attitude and a commitment to work hard is essential. No, it is not always easy, and there will be hurdles along the way, but this is a lifelong change for ones health. A fringe benefit beisides becoming healthier is looking better, which boosts that self-confidence and can't help but make one more attractive! It's been hard for me to not overdo it. I went shopping with my daughter all day yesterday and even ate out for lunch [Water and a few spoonfuls of wonderful Tomato soup]. Today I've been cleaning house, doing laundry, and plan on taking a boat ride this evening with friends and family, My cocktail of choice will be a half cup of V-8 minus the vodka! Sorry to go on, but this has been my first week...not so bad! I'm sure you will do great...stay exited and think about the wonderful adventure to come. Remember, that "last supper" would only last 20-30 minutes, but what you're doing on the 11th will be for a lifetime!

I'll be thinking of you on Monday!

I'm happy to be of some help. I only came on this website a few days before surgery and have learned a lot from so many people! You'll do great!

You will be just fine. I was banded this past Tuesday and remember how nervous I was before surgery. Everybody has had only good reports so far!

I had the anti-nausea patch the night before and left that on for 2 more days. I think it did help, as I only had to take the meds for it once. Make sure you get your medications filled ahead of time, so they are ready when you get home.

When you are done with the surgery they will have you stay awhile just to make sure everything is working well. I had chapstick with me and that helped, you will definitely feel dryed out and you can't drink liquids immediately when you wake up, you have to start slowly.

When you get home make sure you get up and move, that really seems to help with the post-surgery gas. Make sure you are sipping liquids constantly as you don't want to get dehydrated. I had diluted apple juice and cranberry juice, as well as Water. The SF Popsicles were a life saver! When my mouth started to feel dry, I could have a popsicle and not feel so dry.

Make sure you stay up with the pain meds. Don't fall behind, you don't have to be a hero! I was pretty much off the meds by the end of day 2, it wasn't too bad. Mostly you need to move and sip!

Good luck with your surgery!

Best Wishes to you... You will be fine:thumbup:.. and don't worry about that last meal it's all a mental thing... I had to be on a 2 week liquid fast since I had a "fatty liver" so I didn't have a last meal, but all in all I think I was fine without one! I'm actually happy I read this thread... I was banded on Aug 7th.. and I'm happy to see that I am not the only one going through the gas pains. The hardest part for me is to keep getting up... I just feel so tired and drained. We will see what happens tomorrow.

Raine,

It's been a while since i had the band surgery. But i still can offer some advice..

The day before surgery i was a nervous wreck, i couldn't think straight.. My mom said i was a mess.. But that night before surgery, i thought to myself all the reasons why i had decided to have the band and how this was to my benefit.. The next day i went to the hospital and put my complete trust in my surgeon and was ready for my new life...

I am now almost 17mths post-op and am down 104lbs... I never regretted my decision for 1min.. My only wish is that i had done it sooner...

Im not going to lie and say it was easy or painless, it does take work and you will be a little uncomfortable, but it is so worth it.. Not only does the scale move down but all the health benifits you recieve.. Also all the confidence you gain..

Best of luck to you on your new journey and new healthier life!!!:)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
