Alcoholism and cross addiction

Recommended Posts

I am going into recovery on 8/25 through a local hospital. Since being banded 2 years ago I found myself drinking heavily again. I went to a 30 day treatment facility about 5 years ago and relapsed about 3 years ago. I drink 2 to 10 drinks a day depending. Anyone else sober out there?

Thanks Jack. I had 2 years sobriety when I slipped. This time I am going to utilize the AA community more. I did have a sponsor but she lived too far away so that wasn't good. I am looking forward to my new surroundings the 25th. Julie

Got banded exactly one week prior to the one year anniversary of my sobriety date. Spent six weeks last summer in rehab to get sober and have been handling it OK so far. As it says in the book, drinking is but a symptom of our problems.

For me it was finally screwing up the courage to ask for help before I lost my job, family and health.

Find a good support system and stay with it.

Good Luck.

I am newly sober 24 days with a 2 year relapse. I am doing much better.

Hugs Julie and congrats on your 24 days - As they say - One day at a time... You can do it..

food was my drug of choice but I have alot of family members who either drink or do drugs..

So I do have a little understanding and a lot of empathy for your struggles

Proud of you for making the choice to get sober... That in it's self is the biggest and hardest step to make..

Thank you for your post. I relapsed really close to my banding date over 2 years ago. My drinking got a lot worse this Summer with all the pool activities and bbqs, etc. I had to go to detox for a few days but now I feel a lot better. I go to AA daily and working the steps and have a great new sponsor Patty. I am doing step 3 next week with her.

Step 3 is a wonderful step.....my Sponsor took a formal 3rd step with me and it was wonderful. We did the 3rd step prayer together and that was the 1st time I ever got down on my knees with someone...it was really awesome. Hope your Step 3 goes well and congratulations on your 24 days....that's a true miracle!

''Thank you. I stay sober for periods of time then drink again. I go to AA a few times a week. I guess I better get my butt moving and go more often.

I have been banded for 2 1/2 years. I have been an addict/alcoholic for 33 years. Last summer I lost my mind and got deep into drugs and alcohol again. I all but stopped eating lost a lot of weight this way, but do not reccomend it. Went to rehab again and finally started working the steps. I now have almost 7 months clean and sober. I have gained 10 pounds but know I can get it back off. My goal is 150 was at 155 at my sickest point. This time I plan to do it with exercise and diet oh and my higher power.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
