Does anybody NOT throw up?

Recommended Posts

Post anaesthetic nausea is different to throwing up as a result of being too tight or eating wrong though.

Plenty of people puke right after surgery becuase anaesthetics make them nauseous. They'll probably have something in your IV for that, particularly if you know you're prone to it.

Thankfully I have cast Iron guts and never puke after anaesthetics, lol.

I have only PB'd once and it was just a month ago, over a year out of surgery. I don't plan on ever doing it again. I usually just slime a lot when I get something stuck if I eat to fast or don't chew good enough. Good luck to you and I hope you never throw up.

I worried the most about this, too! They understood my fear and gave me the option of wearing a patch behind my ear (the same kind they give you to wear on cruises, etc I think called a TransDerm). I did and the only side effect was blurred vision which went away as soon as I got home and took it off. I will not have surgery ever again without one!

I had no issue with nausea following the surgery.

After that......I have thrown up 2 times due to my own stupidity!! Or PB'd---would be more precise---once when I ate a glazed donut, or actually about 2-3 bites, and it felt like when it hit my stomach it grew to the size of a dozen donuts!! Up it come!! Then months later I was shopping and grabbed a piece of popcorn chicken my granddaughter was eating and forgot I was a bandster, popped it in my mouth chewed once or twice and swallowed, as it slowly moved down my throat, feeling the size of a football, it hit me what I had done!!! Yep it too come back up!!!

The only other times I have thrown up were a year ago last July---I had the stomach flu and was SICK!!!!

Most people learn some of the band lessons through aversion therapy, you do it, it is not pleasant, so you quit doing it!!!

It isn't fun to PB or to throw up----but it is not worth not being banded over to me!

Hi July =) I was banded in June and have not thrown up yet. I do remember my anesthesiologist telling me to let him know if I felt nauseated right away as he could stop it..... so don't be shy! I'm so happy with my band so far - no regrets. I hope you experience the same!

I am 4 1/2 months out and have not thrown up, PBd, or slimed. I have had one fill and will be getting my second on August 20th. I am losing weight, not starving, and not too tight. Some people are so tight that they can barely get there food in and PBing is part of their life. I rather be a litte loose and comfortable. It is like a tight pair of pants - not a good thing. Go for comfort, follow the rules, exercise, and you will be fine.

As has already been pointed out, PB'ing isn't anywhere near as bad as vomiting like when you have a flu. It isn't pleasant, by any means, but not what you are likely imagining.

It's not like the flu, where vomiting is a whole-body experience of heaves and a super-nasty taste that leaves you shaking and hurting. PB doesn't have that foul taste, and isn't gut-wrenching. (I've never been seriously stuck, mine have come right up. Others may disagree with that, it's just MY experience.)

Even the nausea that you feel when it's happening isn't the same type of nausea. Not pleasant, but not nearly as bad. It's very localized, more of a discomfort rather than a sick feeling.

I realize that won't make any sense at all to you until you experience it. Just take heart that it's not as bad as it sounds.

hi, i was banded on 6/10/08 and haven't thrown up once. on surgery day, i was given a lot of anti-nausea medication but haven't had any since. i wake up quesy every day but have a light Breakfast then i'm fine.

i have had 1 or 2 sliming experiences but no food came up and the first one was only a few spits of liquid and the 2nd one was more like 10 minutes of spitting out liquid and pain. that's it for me so far. that 2nd one was from microwaved leftover chicken. i hear THAT is not a good idea - microwaved leftover meat. bad. unless it has a lot of sauce of some sort.

i have a friend who throws up A LOT. i was very worried about that because she was banded way before me. i haven't yet and i think it must be very individual. so i'd say expect it might happen but don't worry too much about it. try to follow the eating rules and you should be ok unless your band is too tight. then you need an unfill of some sort but your dr. will figure all that out.

I was banded on Wednesday (8/6) and I have not thrown up once. I did feel slightly nauseated when I woke up in recovery but that was the only time I felt that way. After that I was just sore around my incisions and now it's just gas pain and soreness around my port area. Please note that this is just my recovery symptoms. Everybody is different. You may have it much more easier or worse than me but don't let that scare you. Think of it more as an adventure. Even if you get naseated they will give you meds to help you with that. If they don't ask for them!

My doctor recommended chewable or liquid Gravol for the first few days, and I took it at regular intervals (following the package) every time I took my pain medication. I didn't even wait to feel nauseated (just like I didn't wait to be in pain to take the demerol). The pain medication was more gross because it had to be ground up, but the chewable Gravol was just fine.

After a couple of days I found that I was nauseous because I was dehydrated, so I took more of the pedia-lite that my doctor had recommended. I love the freezies. I'd recommend stocking up on the chewable gravol and the pedia-lite if you're worried about nausea post-op.

As for PB'ing, well, I haven't had my fill yet, so I can't help you there. But I'm reassured that it won't be as bad as we think.

Banded Aug 5th and never ever felt like I had to throw up. Sore around my left side were the port is and I put ice on it. I am a beach person and this has been hard staying away from the beach. Bored and tired of Jello, crystal light, watered cranberry juice, etc. Just can't wait to get going and start my pudding, applesauce, yogurt next week. Can't wait to excrise....just want to get back to healthy way of living and lose weight. Aug 5th was the best ever. The best decision I have ever made so very happy

I was banded on the 1st of August and haven't had a problem at all. I started mushies on Friday and have tolerated them beautifully. I still have no idea what everyone means by PBing. Someone please tell me what that stands for. My anestesiologis gave me anti-nausea meds via my IV before ever going into surgery and some after surgery. I've yet to have a problem. By the way, all this talk of vommiting reminds me of that great Seinfeld episode where that's all they discussed. Just keep smiling! Oh and by the way, at my 1 week post-op visit, I'd lost 13 pounds. Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slimgirl and Isullivan68, a PB is a Productive Burp, as I understand it, to regurgitate food (involuntarily). If you take too big of a bite, don't chew well enough, eat to fast, etc... the offending food comes back up. I have not had a fill yet-in fact, I'm still on full liquids, so I have not experienced a PB yet (hopefully I won't for awhile, or at all). Also I have not thrown up or felt nauseous after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
