well i thought my nerves were out of control on monday but it being thursday (surgery fri 8 am) and having to meet with the doc assitant I am really nervous and a little upset. she gave me my results to my pre op testing my blood work was good. I have acid reflux(did not need a doc to tell me that haha) the also told me that i have a fatty liver and said it is very common in us people.(no offence anyone )the doc then told me that i would have to sign a concent form that if they were unable to get the band around (cuz of the fatty liver) the would have to open me up. vs laproscopically. and at that time they would take a by op of it. also im not one for hospitals (spent 5 weeks in the hospital b4 i had mt son) and to this day dont like them. the doctors office told me because of my insurance i would have to stay over night i really had my heart set on going home the same day.

Christina,

I was nervous about signing pre op release for open surgery. I would not sign it until my doctor agreed that he would not do an open if he could not do lap. My doc was cool. Told me the hospital required form, but he had not done open and would not do it because he was a lap surgeon. My biggest concern was that my stomach would be too fat and he would not be able to get in there with lap equipment. He then proceeded to look at my stomach and say " Ive banded bigger people than you and you shouldn't worry!" I felt so much better. If you are not comfortable signing consent, call your doctors office and talk to your doc and address your concerns. I do not know how large you are, but a good laparoscopic surgeon should be able to tell you if he expects there to be a reason that he should have to do this.

Also, do not worry. You are making positive changes that will improve your life and feelings about yourself. I love my band!!!

I hope your surgery went splendidly!

I too would be worried about an open surgery, but hopefully your doctor was able to do everything the way you wanted him to!

Post an update as soon as you feel able!

Have a speedy recovery & start losing!

I can't wait to be on the other side of surgery myself!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
