Band Fill Wednesday ....no restriction!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

This is probably the thousandth time you've been faced with this scenario, but here's my story (in brief).

Visited for my first fill. The clinic was v. busy with fellow bandsters. I felt I was part of a production line actually.

When I saw the doc, I felt it was all quite impersonal - a quick hello, how are you? Anyway, he muttered something about 1ml and then filled my band. Afterward I waited outside, drank some Fluid and felt fine. I was then sitting there like an idiot wondering what to do next. I spoke to a nurse and asked both what should I be feeling and what happens next.

To cut a long story short, the doc came back, told me I had 6mls in my band, and if it wasn't enough to come back.

Now I feel I have no restriction whatsoever, in fact, I feel less restricted now than I did on Wednesday!!!! Is 6 mls a lot in the balloon? and should I make an appointment for another fill straight away or should I wait.

Thanks in advance guys!!!!!!!!

PS - I wondered if he was getting me mixed up with someone else with the 6ml thing - he definately said 1ml whilst filling the band!!

Call the office and ask them how much they put in your band - just tell them you forgot or something. He will have charted it right after your filling, probably while still in the fill room. So they can just pull your chart and tell you. This way you know it is your info for sure. If he really did give you 6cc's I'd wait it out, at least 14 days to see if it kicks-in. Usually, fill #1 is more aggressive than subsequent fills, so he probably did give you 6cc's instead of just 1cc. Good Luck!

Also, he may have pre-filled your band before/during surgery with 1cc. So you may have already had 1cc in there and he may have been verifying that there was no leak by pulling back the original 1cc before giving you a fill of 5cc's. Just a thought. Good Luck!

Linda :)

Hi Linda.

Thanks for that. You could be right - he may well put 1ml in during the surgery. I can't understand though why I feel less restriction than I did before. I don't know if it psychological or not, but I'll use your advice and then wait a bit! xx

I had no restriction until fill #3, and even then it was minimal. I didn't truly know what restriction was until fill #4. It is not uncommon to not have any restriction this early on. Try not to let it get to you, you'll get there with time! Good Luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
