Right now all I can think about is how nervous I am about being "put under".

Has anyone ever been given a xanax or some other nerve pill pre op to chill out? I'm all good with surgery and I know life isn't going to be roses and sunshine for the first week (or two... or month..), but I'm just so nervous about that.

I'll tell you what my Dad told me and it's a good one really, lol "it's not brain surgery" and you know what, that really helped me. Before you go into surgery you will be given something to help you relax and feel real good(just can't remember the name of it right now, but it was nice), trust me!!! You'll be happy your starting your new life. You've made a good decision, now trust in what you decided to do :) Good luck to you and your new journey to living again!!!! Think positive cuz that can only bring positive things to you.

The anesthesiologist and/or CRNA will meet with you shortly before surgery ask them for something for anxiety. This is a common request preop and they should have no problem giving you a little something in your IV to help you relax. Don't worry - you will do great!

Hi Kaytiebug - let me tell you, that was my NUMBER ONE fear for surgery. I had never had surgery before, and had never been "put under" so I was soooo worried that either I would wake up in the middle of surgery, or that I wouldn't wake up period.

My nerves got the best of me as I was sitting in the pre-op room just this past Tuesday and I started crying every time someone asked me "how I was", or if I was "excited". I was sooo scared. The staff was sweet as could be, and did their best to calm me - but of course the fear of the unknown is hard to shake. Then...my "best friend" arrived, the anesthesiologist (haha). He gave me a "calming drug", and I promise you it kicked in within 30 seconds (no joke!!). After that, everything seemed fine and honestly the last thing I remember was being wheeled into the operation room, being told they were moving me to another bed (which I didn't feel), and being asked to breathe into an oxygen mask. The next thing I knew, I was being wheeled into the recovery room and being sat up. It was amazing to me - how quickly it went by!

I know the unknown is always scary - but I hope this helps calm your nerves some. Feel free to ask me any other questions - because I was like you and wanting a valium or something before even getting to the surgery center that morning haha :) TAKE CARE!

I got some happy juice in my IV while I was in the pre op holding pen. Woohoo, that was some grrrreat stuff! It was ... Verset. I kept mumbling that they ought to sell that stuff! That my boss could use some... I was so 'happy' I hope I didn't make a pass at the doc.:)

I also got something before surgery. The nurse who was prepping me had to get the I.V. in my hand, and then after it was in she gave me a shot of something to relax me. I got another shot of whatever it was about an hour later, right before they wheeled me into the surgery. Good luck!

Ha ha, I am right there with the rest of you. Wish I could have that IV hooked up at school with a little happy juice to get me through the day!

Don't worry, they do usually give you something to calm down - everyone is a bit nervous before they go into surgery - it is natural!

Good Luck!

Yes I was given Valium in my IV before my cardiac cath procedure. I had to have that done in April for the insurance approval to be banded. I was nervous since my last surgery was when I was 7, and I really don't remember it. I was tearing up, the nurse and dr asked me why. I told them this was my first surgery since I was a kid and I was just real nervous. They asked me if I wanted someting and I was glad to take it.

After that I felt fine, until they asked me to scoot over to the OR table. I got a bit nervous again, they gave me some "sleepy juice" in my IV and that was it. I just remember waking up back in my room and it was over. Was nothing to really get worked up about. I am naturally an anxious person, so will mention it to my surgeon on my pre-op apt. but sure they will do it the same way as before.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
