Can restriction come later?

Recommended Posts

Ok I am like a week out from getting my first fill and as I expected I am still eating what I want and how I want although I try to eat right it never happens it's like walking again you have to learn. But with no restriction I am eating basically what I want. Well today I was being bad, ( I am about to have a visitor sorry tmi) and I wanted so bad a double decker taco from taco bell. I got one and ate it chewing very carefully (becasue I still try and practice that . Anyway I am feeling like it's stuck in my throat/chest and it's not painful just uncomfrotable and this is the first time I have felt this. Is that restriction?

Yes, that is the restriction.

I just had my first fill yesterday and I am not feeling any restriction.

Once before I had my band filled I tried a piece of bread and Peanut Butter. It got stuck! OMG that was very painful!! Thank goodness it decided to come back up. Now I am afraid of peanut butter. I have had some bread and it went down ok. Honestly, I think what I did was not chew it very well. I was starving and made a piece of bread and peanut butter and took a couple bites not even concentrating on chewing. It probably was the chewing issue but I am still afraid to try peanut butter again.

Sorry about you getting stuck it must feel horrible but if it's anything like this I think I will try harder to get this right. I was hungry I am not going to lie. But I did chew alot but maybe not enough. It's still there an hour later I wonder when it will go down I have taken a few sips of crystal lite and it seems to be going down but not that going down feeling anotherwards it's not coming back up yet....

I didn't reach perfect restriction until my third fill, but there are several folks who only ever need one fill, especially depending on your band.

I know the smaller bands that are 4cc usually never need more than 2 fills. One thing I stay away from is bread alltogether. I do eat pumperknickel bread every now and again, but it's very rare.

I recently had to get an unfill because out of the blue, after having perfect restriction for two months I somehow swelled up from stress or something and couldn't keep much down.. I was miserable.. never allow yourself to get that tight.. it's so painful and I went into starvation mode and only lost 4 pounds in a month when I usually lose 7-10 lbs a month.. some people think its good when they don't eat or can barely eat, but it's not good. it's bad... good luck! :)

First of all, I want to say I am not trying to be mean or bash you because I am not. I have read so many comments when someone pours their heart out and they get attacked. That is not my intention as I struggle just like you. What caught my attention is that you said, you eat what you want and how much you want. Even though it is hard, (very hard) the key is to change what you "want" and "how " you want. I know it is easier when you have good restriction, but the band is not going to decide what is a "good" choice for your diet. I believe when the doc says after a time we will be able to eat what we want, it doesn't mean continue the old diet, but in smaller portions. If it is bad, it is bad. Going from supersize heart attack meal to a smaller portion of the same, is not all that much different; it is still bad.

Like I said, I struggle with this constantly too and I guess I am lucky in that I haven't really had any cravings for anything. But I do know what I use to eat and sometimes my head will try to tell me to go ahead and eat it, but I don't because my motivation is to be healthy no matter what the cost.

I am sorry in advance if I said anything to offend you. I have just read so many entries where people are blaming the band for not working or blaming non restriction for eating what they know deep inside they shouldn't just because they can. I know because I have done this myself and for me, it is hard, but I am working on changing my relationship with food. I didn't pay $12,000.00 to fail at this and I am not going to let food beat me. This is a mental game and I have to make myself mentally stronger and that is what being here on this site is doing for me.

Best wishes,

Stephanie

I found that after my first fill (4.6) I experienced the same thing you did. I figured out that I ate to fast and did not chew very well. It's something you learn as you go. I now stop eating sooner and let my stomach tell my brain That Was Enough food. And it usually was.

It's just at times I get this urge to eat something I shouldn't and I fall and will fall prolly again and will have to pick myself up again is all. I needed to vent and hear what you said to me which was make better choices and get me arse into gear!!! Thank you!!!

Slinderella2b,

Thanks for not getting upset with anything I said. I worried about it after I had posted because my intention was not to make you feel bad. We all fall and we all pick ourselves up again and again. We will do so until we get it right. It is just that I don't like to think of people failing when they have come so far just in making the decision to be banded. Most of the time, it is after a lifetime of bad habits and illness and many failed attempts. I know, because some of that is me too.

I never post anything to make myself feel like I know more because Lord knows I don't and I am fairly new to this myself. I guess it helps keep me on track by reinforcing my thoughts with myself as well. Again thank you for being so sweet.

Here's to better choices, healthier lifestyle and the benefit of being a slender, new us.

Best wishes,

Stephanie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
