Getting ready for banding

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I was going to be banded last year but was declined by insurance because I hadn't had my supervised weight loss yet. Well, I finished that this year, then lost my mom due to cancer, so now I am on the road to being a bandster again. I have a visit with the surgeon scheduled in two weeks, and I expect the surgery to be less than a month after that. I am SO READY. I had considered the RNY but decided that wasn't for me. The lapband will provide me with a TOOL to lose the weight without being too hungry. I am looking forward to being active and happy as a slimmer person. I am a 51 year-old grandma of 5 year-old twin girls, a 12 year-old girl and a 14 year-old boy (two older ones are only home in the summer). Plans of theme parks, white-water rafting, golfing, and lots of hiking and bike rides are in the future. I am very excited, but also realistic, and I KNOW I will need lots of encouragment and ACCOUNTABILITY. I would like a mentor/buddy who will be firm, yet kind, with me when I hit a bump in the road. Who am I kidding? I want someone who will NAG, YELL AND SCREAM if I don't do what I'm supposed to. Soooooo, if you are up to the task of being my buddy/mentor, please contact me!

That would be great!! You'll be getting your surgery next week! I'm so happy for you! I have about the same amount of weight to lose. How tall are you? I'm just over 5'8" and I started this journey when I weighed about 272. I'm down to about 256 now, and I'd like to get down to a size 12. That may be at 150 or 160. Even though I'm 51, I still 'think' like a younger person, and I have a lot of active goals. I think those goals will help me during weight loss. Do you have goals, and if so, what are they? You're very young, so you've got a lot of time left to do fun stuff. I think you're making a very good decision!

Well, thanks and take care. Talk to you soon!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
