How did/do you cope with "head hunger?"

Recommended Posts

I'm beginning to have issues with this now. I'm one of us who rarely feels hungry....its now one of my "goals"....to have hunger pains BEFORE eating! What a concept!!

I was just looking for others' experiences with managing this.

Thanks, Barb

I agree. Thanks Jack. I think I'll print that post.

I sometimes go for food when my kids stress me out, which is often! I'm trying to change that habit. I either resist, or go for a glass of Water or some raw veggies instead of a marshmello or a hunk of sharp cheddar cheese!! I should try jumping on my stair stepper! Its so hard sometimes to stop eating when something tastes so good! I'll get that full feeling from my band and be sad that I shouldn't have more. "Shouldn't" not "can't" because I have gone past that point a few times.....resulting in a run for the toilet!

Sometimes, I wish our food DIDN'T taste so good!!!

Application of any of a number of self-motivating ideas and behavioral changes. Read stuff. Rededicate yourself daily to your goal. Focus on activities rather than eating.

Train yourself on the difference between 'full' and 'hungry'.

Train yourself to recognize the pleasant stages of approaching hunger, and learn the satisfaction of 'eating to live' rather than 'living to eat'.

Short list: Don't eat if you're not hungry; STOP eating the very moment you no longer ARE hungry. That means in 1 or 2 bites sometimes. And sometimes spit out what's in your mouth.

Another way of thinking of it: physical hunger is satisfied by eating.

If you can recognize 'physical hunger', then any eating not reducing that physical hunger is NOT because your body is hungry.

cheers on your journey

thanks jack !!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
