Hello everyone, I wanted to know if I was the only one experiencing this. Everythime I eat red meat I end up throwing up due to the fact it feels like it is stuck in my throat. I have very sensitive gag reflexes. I know throwing up is not good for the band, but I can't help it. Has anyone experienced this? Will I ever be able to eat hamburger or a steak again. Thanks for your comments.

Well, the first question is, are you eating small small bites and chewing really really good???

meat seems to be hard for some to eat and not for others. Hopefully you can figure out a way to eat it safely, without throwing up, I mean. You do not want to keep doing that. Talk to your doctor about is and see if they have any suggestions. Good luck to you!!

What I have found over the months is that my ability to eat meat varies on the cut, how moist it is, and the temperment of my band on any given day. There are some days that no matter how much I chew and no matter how small the pieces are, meat just won't go down well. On other days, as long as I eat slowly, tiny pieces, and lots of chewing; meat is not a problem. I can never eat much. 2-3 oz. is generally my max at any meal.

I find I really can't eat it either. I'm with Jack on the why bother with ground beef. Having to spit those bits out is too gross for me. I use ground turkey in place of hamburger and it works perfect for me. I tend to like Hamburger Helper once in a while and I haven't found a one that wasn't good with either ground turkey or chicken.

I too can eat steak if DH makes it on the grill and I tried the microwave warm up once too, YUCK. I tried filet mignon in a restaurant and it wouldn't go down.

I can eat slow roasted, home cooked, roast beef when it's tender enough to melt in my mouth.

Overall, I don't bother with red meat. The good news is that I'm off my cholesterol meds and still lowering my cholesterol with diet alone!

I am not much of a red meat eater, however not too long ago I tried a piece of steak and had the very same experience, what went down immediately came right back up, so I have come to the conclusion that red meat is just not for me. Thankfully it is something I usually stay away from anyways so no problem for me. I have also found bread and white rice are very hard for me to tolerate so I have definetly keeping those to a very minimum as well. Had a fill yesterday and the PA said that those are three things most banded people should avoid anyways.

Thanks for the info.. I haven't had any bread since my surgery. My dietitian told me to stay away from all white foods.. I have tried to cheat with some potatos but I don't do well with them as well. So I am glad to hear I am not the only one having problems with red meat. I try to chew my food very carefully in the begining I thought it was because I wasn't chewing properly so I was very careful to pay attention to my chewing. Thanks for all the help all you guys are a great support group.

Just since my last fill I can NOT eat white potatoes. Sweet potatoes, however, go down like butter.... yum!

before my 2nd fill, i gave up the bun and got used to just eating the burger but now even that doesn't stay down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
