Questions about using out of town doctors

Recommended Posts

I was scheduled to be banded here in my city and was very comfortable at first. However, I ended up cancelling my original banding date and my doctor's whole attitude has changed. He has not rescheduled by surgery.

I had all the pre-op tests and had been approved by my insurance.:)

I am now looking for another surgeon, hopefully in So Cal, but if I have to go out of my area I do have some questions.

I noticed many people go to various centers in different states or even into Mexico for Lap Banding. Does that mean you do meet your surgeon until you arrive for the surgery?

What about your pre-op testing, how and where is that scheduled?

What about fills and follow-up after the surgery?

I live in Cali but may end up going to Atlanta.

the surgeon i chose is 4 hours away from where i live. i did have to drive down for all my testing and nutrition class but they scheduled everything so i could have it done in 1 day. since you've already had your pre-op testing, you may be able to get the results transfered to the next surgeon you choose. i do have to travel the 4 hours for my fills but that's because the first 2 years of fills were included in my surgery cost. just make sure you find someone close to home who will do your fills before you travel anywhere for sugery!

Kris:

Thanks for the information. I diffinitely will look for a fill doctor in case I end up finding a surgeon totally out of my area.

By the way where is Dr. Curry located?

Anne

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
