Thinking about it !!

Recommended Posts

I am thinking about getting banded and I am not sure. My sister had gastric bipass over 5yrs ago and thinks it's best thing since butter on bread. But I have seen her get sick, and have seen her go through that "dumping feeling". Does that also happen with banding? How do you continue to go out to eat with family and friends when you are finished eating in 5 minutes and the rest of the party will be eating for the next hour or more. I just don't know if I can do this. Physically, my body is screaming for it, I know I need it, mentally I just don't know.

:confused2:

No there is no dumping with the Lap band. The weight loss is slower with the Lap Band but besides the fact that there is no dumping, the mortality rate is 10 times lower, lower risk of nutritional deficiencies, lower risk of hair loss, less invasive with faster recovery and most important to me, it is adjustable and reversible.

If you were to eat your meal in five minutes, you would not be doing it right and risking getting sick. You eat very slowly with the Lap Band, it is recommended that you take 20-30 minutes to eat your meal. You take very small bites and chew well then put your fork down between bites. I have found that most people eat way too fast and a couple times when I went out with family they were done before me.

You can still go out to eat with family and friends... With the band you have to eat slowly and chew, chew, chew, so it should take you pretty much the same amount of time to eat as a non-banded person (maybe even longer than them, it takes me longer), you are just eating a lot less than a non-banded person of course. Good luck with your decision, this is a great site to help you research the band!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
