Port pain 2 weeks out?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, got a weird situation (I have an appointment with the surgeon tomorrow so no worries on that front, I'm just looking for some input here).

I never really had any port pain at all, just at the incision line. Last night I sat down kind of strangely (and quickly, I kind of plopped down in frustration over a telephone conversation) and suddenly, some pretty significant pain about 2 inches above the port incision. I poked it a bit (later when the pain went away) and found that that's where the port is!

The pain kind of comes and goes now, comes when I move or stretch in a certain way or even slouch in my computer chair.

Anyone have this? What might it be? I'm of course worried I managed to pop a stitch and flip the thing or make the tubing come undone or something dramatic like that.

Again, I'm seeing the surgeon tomorrow and will certainly ask there--but anyone know what I'm talking about? Suggestions?

Hi PennyLane, Yes my stomach where my port is, is still very sensitive. I still can't lay comfortably on my right side. I also can't lay flat on my stomach yet. (So no tanning bed yet:sad:) Also sometimes just twisting funny will make it hurt. I had my surgery 1 and 1/2 weeks ago. I read that where the port is, it takes the longest to heal or feel normal again.

You are still healing. The pain completely went away in about a month for me. For me there was a lot of incision pain for a week or two. Two weeks out, it didn't hurt steadily but if I moved a certain way or bumped it I would get pain inside. Two months out I can twist, bend and poke at it and not feel any pain.

Your port may have flipped, mine did - no big deal, the doctor was able to flip it back with his hand (from outside) in about 2 or 3 minutes.

Is anyone able to see their port or feel it from the outside? I was banded 3 wks ago. I have no pain, the site is a little tender, but it is protruding out a little. I don't know what this is. Its not like I've lost a whole lot of weight yet. I'm kinda nervous.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
