Hi folks!

I just got banded this morning! I was the first on the schedule and everything went great. Started at 7:30 and by 9:45 I was sipping coffee in the recovery room! I'm a coffee junkie and nurse said I couldn't have any today. My doc walked by and she asked when I could first have coffee and he said, "go ahead and give him some!" Boy did that taste good.

Thus far I've been up and roaming the halls, sipping broth and small Jello bites.

Have not received ANY pain meds and I feel fine. A bit sore - but nothing bad at all. I told them I was about a 2 or 3 on the 10 scale.

That's about it for now, but I wanted to jump on and tell everyone how much I've enjoying reading and learning from all of your experiences and thought I'd share mine.

Congratulations, Brad!

Don't be too quick to judge the pain, though...for me it took a few days to be sore. It wasn't so much internal pain as it was where I had sutures. I found it painful to sleep on my stomach and to get in and out of bed. I was a devout user of the liquid Tylenol because I insisted on going back to work 2 days later--couldn't drive and be on pain meds! I'm pleased to hear you're up and doing well. I'm convinced getting up and walking the halls was my savior--physically and mentally. I also found that I was kind of foggy for a few days after surgery though I assume that's the anesthesia that they give you...just don't over do it. I know I should have taken more time from work. Because I didn't tell anyone about my surgery, I picked up and went back to life as it always was (minus the eating and exercising....) the next day. I hope your night goes as well as your day. Be well, and welcome to banded life!

Thanks everyone! Slept well through the night and now I'm awaiting the barium swallow so I can go home. Still no real pain - some gas. I would compare how I feel to having severely over-exercised. Didn't eat a whole lot yesterday. I think I managed to finish one small Jello cup and some broth. Plus some fruit punch and coffee.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
