3 weeks post op and getting stuck?

Recommended Posts

Hello

I am three weeks post-op and my post-op eating plan allows for soft foods starting this past week. I got stuck on a small piece of poached egg..OUCH!! I also got stuck on a piece of chicken breast tonight, not pleasant. I have not yet had a fill  Could it be swelling still? I go back on liquids for a day after i get stuck cause I am scared to eat again.

Anyone else??

hi. i am 17 days post-op and i have not gotten stuck yet .. i have eaten chicken but not dry .. i have heard if something gets stuck, you should go back to liquids so you're probably doing the right thing by not piling more stuff on top of the stuck item .. maybe you have some swelling/irritation from the 1st thing that stuck .. maybe liquids for a couple/few days instead of one .. i fear getting something stuck .. yikes.. good luck ..

You could still have swelling, you could have a lot of restriction with the band alone. There are many reasons.

When you say a piece of egg, though, I have to think of how easy it is to mash up egg... remember to chew, chew, chew. And take very small, small bites - the size of a pencil eraser.

If you do that, eat slow, and let the first bite go down and relax before you take the next, you'll be able to gauge what goes down easier than other things.

Take the time to heal. If you are constantly stuck - a very bad idea anytime, but especially when healing - try eating smaller (and possibly softer) things until you can eat without getting stuck.

And always call your doctor if you are unsure of how to proceed.

It is still so early after surgery, I would stick to softer foods or different foods that you can tolerate for now. You may not be ready for chicken or eggs prepared in that manner. It could be that you will be OK in another week or two but it is best not to put too much of a strain on your stomach this early on.

Help--I don't think I have any restriction at all. Have not had trouble eating anything so far. I am 16 days from surgery. Haven't had any meats yet. I feel I may be eating too much. My next appt for my first fill is 4 weeks away. Anybody in the same situation?

Also how long does it take before the feeling that your insides are going to fall out in bed and when you sit too long goes away. I'm still awfully sore. Thanks for the replies---

16 days is too early to gauge anything. For the first 6 weeks or so, focus on healing. Make healthy choices and let your body get used to having the band placed. Take it slow, follow the rules.

Once you have your first fill, then focus on restriction.

What does it feel like when something is stuck? I'm 16 days post op and don't believe anything has been stuck but at times I've felt a bit of tightness but I feel that with or without eating so not entirely sure that something is stuck. Every once in a while I get a bit of an ache below my left rib cage but it's very mild and goes away (feeks like a very mild case of stitch in your stomach). Any ideas what that could be?

When I feel something is stuck.. which seems to be a lot lately.. for me, it seems like I can't tell something is stuck until I'm on the 3rd or 4th bite. My gauge now is to drink something first and see if it goes down. That way, I can tell if I'm restricted or not before I even try to eat any food. I have found that my pouch is very sensitive to throwing up. If I throw up even once, it swells where I can only have liquids the rest of the day if I'm lucky.. If I throw up several times in a day, I might not even be able to have liquids until the next morning. I possibly need an unfill, but it's costing me $175 dollars, so I'm avoiding it as much as I can. When something is stuck, I also get this discomfort in my back which is very uncomfortable for me. Also, if something is stuck, I will have to burp a lot, and I will have productive burping as well. For me, when something gets stuck, sometimes I try to wait and let it go down since I am so sensitive and throwing up can make my pouch swell up for days at a time, but usually I end up having to throw up to get it out. I have also found that in the mornings, I am much more restricted, but I can almost eat normally for dinner (still very slowly and small bites).

Many people have problems with eggs in any form, so that doesn't surprise me. I can't tell you what it is about eggs, but it's common!

Fried or (dry) grilled chicken is also another common problem. You have to cut it up in teeny tiny pieces....like the size of a pencil eraser. No kidding.

My girlfriend told me to chew, and chew, and chew some more, and that when think you have chewed enough, chew some more. Funny, but not so much when you are actually doing it.

My problem is I think I have no restriction even after my first fill. I have never had a problem eating anything yet. I am not on any red meat yet, but I think I could even eat that. How many fills does it take to reach the point where you actually feel the restriction? I still get hungry also. Is anyone going through this?

That happens, I wouldn't do anything til you're 6 - 8 weeks out, then if you're still like this talk with your doctor, it'll be time for a fill. Sometimes people need a number of fills to get a restriction. I needed 3 fills before I felt any restriction at all.

Thanks for your reply. I have another appointment in 2 weeks. Hope I get another fill with restriction this time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
