How do I get all of my protein in?

Recommended Posts

I just started the mushy stage and am wondering how I'm supposed to get all 70 gms of Protein in at this stage? I'm so used to drinking the shakes to get the protein and knew I could control my calorie intake but how do I do that with food without stretching my pouch? I really struggle with forcing myself to eat especially since I'm not really hungry.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Wow! You have to have 70 grams? They told me at least 50. So I drink a 30 gram Protein suppliment. It's ready-made and called "Premier". Comes in little juice like boxes and available at costco. I believe they are 160 calories with 1 gram of sugar. The rest you could get from scrambled eggs (6 each), milk 8 oz (6.3), cheddar cheese (my fav!) 3.5 oz (25), etc. There's a really good book that has become my best friend. It's simply"Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". Has lots of ideas and recipes you might enjoy. Good luck!

Yes, even now I have to supplement my food intake with two Protein shakes a day to get in my 80 grams of Protein.

I use the IDS Multi Pro whey protein isolate in belgian chocolate flavor (whey protein concentrate has lactose and doesn't blend well at all!) powder and one scoop in Water gives me 26 grams of protein, about 4 grams of carbs and really helps fulfill my daily Vitamin requirements too.

I am now at that perfect spot (have been since my last fill) and my food intake is almost nil--so we have to take care of our bodies for the rest of our lives--protein supplements just come with the territory, m'dear!

Protein based baby food is good when you still don't have much of an appetite.

Other good Protein mushie choices:

Refried Beans blended (or any kind of beans)

Canned chicken or tuna blended in blender with with FF mayo or dresing

Oatmeal or cream of wheat cooked in skim milk instead of Water

( I also saw on this site somewhere, a suggestion for canned chicken and Tostitos brand spinach dip blended together and I thought that was pretty yummy)

You can still supplement with shakes but try to get your stomach accostomed to thicker foods as much as possible.

Don't worry about stretching your pouch, just eat a little at a time and you will be fine. This it a time to learn to listen to your body & retrain yourself to eat slowly with small bites. I could only handle about a 1/2 cup of food at at time when I first went on mushies. Measure that much out and eat slowly and the band will tell you when you've had enough. Your pouch is not going to stretch unless you consitently ignore the full signals and continue to overeat.

I have not tried the Premier, but I am familiar (and a fan of ) Worldwide shakes. They come in 21g and 35g versions. The Vitamin Shoppe ($2.79 each here in Maryland) and GNC ($2.99 each) carry the 35's in chocolate and vanilla. strawberry, banana Cream, and Cookies n' Cream in 35's are offered by both online. I started drinking it when my sister told me about it. We found it at Trader Joe's for $2.29 for the 35's and $1.69 for the 21's, in both chocolate and vanilla. I buy it there. Even on the mushy stage I was told to continue Protein Shakes so I had no trouble getting in my Protein. I did some of the same things already mentioned (refried Beans mixed with a little pulverized salsa, heat in microwave 2 minutes and put Kraft fat free shredded cheese on top when it comes out; runny instant oatmeal made with skim milk; instant mashed potatoes with fat free gravy; applesauce; creamy tuna or egg salad made with light mayo and a little mustard; Lipton noodle Soup with chicken broth, not pieces). Even the fat freed refried beans and fat free cheese have protein. Good luck with your journey.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
