dieter's say bands are cheating

Recommended Posts

It is just symptomatic of the overall prejudice and ignorance regarding obesity that exists in our society. The mainstream population has been raised on a steady media diet that portrays obese people as gluttonous, and out of control eaters. They're the butt of every cruel joke whether it be in a drama, comedy, etc. How many pathetic fat people have been the butt of laughter in those high school hi jinks type of movie. Even we have been brainwashed. How many of us didn't initially feel guilty (even just a teeny bit) about opting for WLS? WLS is relatively new in the US and it's come about because of the epidemic of fat. 60% of youngsters now growing up are overweight and they will go into obesity if it's not corrected. WLS is growing FAST and I'm sure will be one of the most common surgeries performed within the next 20 years. It will take time for the social conscience to re-define what obesity is all about and then people will start seeing WLS through a different lens.

Until then, we can lead the way by not just accepting that this prejudice will be a long time in ousting. It's as senseless and ignorant as are all prejudices. Prejudice has no logic. We shouldn't hide it. We should put it out there so that maybe others that are too afraid to do this can be heartened and empowered to change their lives AS WE HAVE!!! HOORAY TO US!!!!!

j. lynn---I like that about the epideral!!! I'll use that if anyone ever says that to me

Staramorcita.......couldn't agree with you more.

I think the thing that ticks me off the most...some one like Renee Zellwegger gets praised because she can put on 30 pounds and take it off for Bridget Jones diary. Heaven knows there have got to be actors/actresses out there who are a size 14 already who have been waiting to be accepted and who could have easily played the part without having to gain wait...yet, it is more dedication for a size 0 person to play the part instead. Man that makes me so mad!!!!

When I come across this argument that wls is "copping out", taking the easy way out, cheating..whatever...I turn it around and ask them...what is more foolish..doing the same thing over and over again or stopping that insanity any way you can?

I vote for stopping that insanity. I always say that if I was going to be in the 5% statistically that loses weight and keeps it off, I would have done it already..now in my late 30's..I am STILL in the 95% that loses and gains back..so why keep doing something that does not work and stop the insanity any way I can..which means WLS for me.

What people don't understand about WLS is that they think "well if you just dieted and excercised, you could lose it"..well yeah..sure thing...but I didn't get this surgery to lose weight only..I primarily got it to KEEP IT OFF for good..stop the insanity of doing the same thing over and over again...

I wouldn't call that "cheating"...just stopped being stupid!

Just a theory, but doesn't that Gastric Ballooning sound like a good culprit for the "Hollywooders" who drop weight like mad when a role calls for it? They say 'Oh I went No carbs for 8 weeks" or "I got a personal trainer" Blah. I think they got ballooned! Can't prove it, but I think so.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
