I am still awaiting my band, however have an odd question~sorry!

I'm a nurse and at work tonite I had a patient become sick and vomit. What can happen to your band if you get ill? We all can get the flu, do banders vomit normally? Can the force cause the bad to shift? Again, sorry, but I couldn't help but wonder.

My surgeon gave me anti-nausea scripts and told me that it is very important that we avoid vomiting especially during healing because it can cause the internal sutures to come loose.

hi there, i recommend this book! it has a wealth of info on how to live with the band and pre-op stuff too!

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Laparoscopic-Adjustable-Gastric-Banding-Achieving/dp/0595311148/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217524353&sr=8-3]Amazon.com: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding: Achieving Permanent Weight Loss with Minimally Invasive Surgery: Jessie H. Ahroni Ph.D. A. R. N. P.: Books[/ame]

my surgeon said to call immediately if there's any vomiting - to get a prescription to stop it. (tho i would rather have it on hand already - that's a great idea!).

you could slip your band (so i've read) but once it's healed in place after surgery it's probably less likely especially if you follow your dr's orders. but it could happen. it's one of the risks.

some people - maybe most? - do vomit some from eating with the band but i hear it's much less intense - more like a big burp. that type of vomiting is different than when you are sick from the flu (less forceful).

hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
