Fever? Nose Bleed?

Recommended Posts

This is my 2nd day post-op and I'm running a fever 100.4. Is this normal? My nose has been bleeding, just slightly. Just scared of pneumonia . . . yikes!

I had a slight nosebleed shortly after surgery but i did not have fever. I gathered the nosebleed was from breathing through my nose because my throat hurt from the breathing tubes after i woke up. I would keep a very close eye on your fever. If it gets any higher, i would be calling the doc's office immediately.

I was told to contact the Dr.s office immediately if I ran a fever....I would call the Dr just to be safe. Hope you feel better.

No, this is not normal. Fever is a sign of infection when it happens after surgery. Take some liquid Tylenol tonight and call your MD in the morning.

My doctor gave the following instructions for calling him immediately if any of the following were experienced post op:

Fever 100.5 or above

Chest pain and/or shortness of breath

Nausea and/or vomitting that last more than 12 hours

Pain, redness, and/or swelling in your legs

Urine output less than four times in 24 hours

Increased pain and/or pus-like drainage from your wounds

Pain that is unrelieved by pain medication

Hi Kathryn, I would watch your fever very close if it goes up you might want to call ASAP. As for your nose bleed, the first thing that I think of is blood thinners. Are you on Lovenox or coumadin? I have seen nose bleeds from that. Good luck to you, I hope you feel better soon.

I agree with Smartiegirl. I think the nosebleed could be from blood thinners they use before, during and after surgery. I didn't have coumadin. I can't remember what it was called, just several shots in my belly. Have you been sneezing along with the nosebleeds? With the blood thinner and a sneeze, you could have ruptured a blood vessel.

Thanks to all of you for the replies about my fever & nosebleeds. As it turns out, I took your advice and called Dr. office and they had me come in (I started oozing liquid from the port incision). They said the fever is not unusual and as long as it doesn't go over 100.5 not to worry about it. The nose bleed was from the heprin shot and as long as my gums were not bleeding when I brushed then all is fine. The seepage from the port was from my ON-Q pain management catheter. They took it out and I've since not had a nosebleed or fever since! I love you guys - could not make it without you ALL. God Bless.

xox,

Kathy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
