Hey

Other than wishing they had the band fitted sooner- has anyone got any regrets on having the band done or has anyone had complications & had to have your band removed??

Cheers

Kel

I don't know if I would have had my band put in sooner. I really don't think I was ready before. I actually thought (for a while there) I was happy fat. I loved eating - that's all I do. Everything centered around food. I had to be mentally ready to give up that food centered life.

I wouldn't have my band removed now unless I had complications. I did have to have port revision. At my first fill, six weeks after surgery, I discovered my port had flipped. That delayed me getting a fill until revisoin surgery. I had surgery on April 10th, Revision on June 13th and my first fill on July 2nd. I wasn't happy about the revision, but we have to play the cards we are delt sometimes.

Hey Brandy.

I regretted a little until I got my head straight. The night I got home from surgery I turned on the tv and there was a show on about a chef doing a food tour of South Carolina. My mom was born in South Craolina and I've visted many times. Watching this show made me miss my mom and made me realize I would not be able to eat the food shown on the tour.

I turned off the TV, wrote a little in a journal about this band and how I fought for the insurance to pay for it. This got my head cleared and I've been fine ever since (a whole 11 days since surgery.)

I lost 20lbs. in 4 days and about 25 total since 7/18. I used Depaul Hospital in St. Louis and Dr.Scott did the surgery. 270 lbs. now - another 100 to go.

Kelly,

Good luck on your surgery. The one thing I can tell you from my experience is that the amount and research and preparation I did for this could not possibly have prepared me for the actual surgery.

The surgery went well and I recovered more quickly that I thought I would. I had the surgery on Friday and went to work the following Tuesday. I've had a couple of issues I'm dealing with but I think I will be OK. The thing I did not expect was the psychological impact of actaully having the band. Dinners, BBQs, etc. are no longer important to me. food, once a major focus of my day, is now almost an afterthought. I'll feel hungry once in a while and remember I need to eat something. This is the thing I wasn't prepared for. I didn't realize how unimportant food would become to me. I kinda like this new feeling.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
