need info on taking medications

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I'm back again asking for information. I have resolved how to take all but one of my medications. Does anyone have leg cramps and have to take quinine for them. I take qualaquin, the only one sold in the United States. It is a large capsule, and I was advised not to swallow it. This is the worst tasting powder, and I need some advice. When I called the nurse today, she didn't have any answers. I need to know what others do about leg cramps and meds for them.

Please let me know if you have any infol. I was banded 7/21/08.

Thanks,

norad10

I think if you went to your pharmacist you would get an answer. They know all the drugs and what may be available to replace the drug you are now on. Or they will be able to tell you if the drug can be crushed and what you could take with it to cover the taste. Of course there is the old trick my mother taught me. If the drug allows you to, disolve the pill in a bit of juice then hold you nose when swallowing Believe me it works.

I had TB and was required to drink the most foulest of liquids. By holding my nose, I couldn't taste the foul stuff. Good luck

I have been having lots of leg cramps and muscle spasms in my back. I went to GNC , they told me to take Protein with potassium. I am 5 days out from doing this and most of the cramps are gone. Body builders know what they are talking about. Good luck! Let us know.

Thanks for your answer. I told the dr today, and they sent me for a ultra sound on my left leg. I have pain from ankle to knee only on left leg. I am waiting for answer, will call tomorrow a.m. I was a little disappointed today, as I was hoping to go on pureed food. But doctor said to stay on liquids for another 1 to 2 weeks. I know I will be lusting at my son's bithday party sunday, but since I am not hungry, I am sure I will survive. Wish I hadn't volunteered to bake special cake. I'm 2 wks, 1 day, and except for small skin infection, because nurse left 2 staples in, I am doing good. Once all the gas goes I am sure I will feel great. I am so happy now, that I finally conveniced the insurance to cover procedure. Really think I made the right decision. How do you feel about this.

Thanks for your reply. There is only one capsule left that that tastes disgusting. I was going to split it into two capsules, but now have to find a pharmist that will sell the gel capsules. Now to find out why I get leg pains in my left ankle to knee. I had ultra sound today. I will take the advice on potassium and ck out GNC. Thanks, N

You pharmacist is the best person to advise you as to how you can take the capsule. given that, otherwise, I would do as someone else suggested, that would be to disolve the capsule, hold your nose and swallow. good luck.

I saw dr today, down 20 + from when I started, I was told when I finished the liquid prozac, I could try to take capsules. The leg cramps are horrible. My general practioner, said I was not getting enough quinine the way I was taking the med. I just tried to swallow it whole, and so far I can get it down. I am going to call the nurse tomorrow and find out if I can start pureed foods. It's been three weeks, and I am getting bored. But not by how I look. How are you doing with your medications.

Nora

Hi Norad,, I don't know if this will work for you, but I crush my meds (pills), I use a flat, smooth plier, and then mix the powder in my yogurt or Jello. As for my leg cramps, I go for some banana, or potato, that has potassium in it..I don't know if it is the same kind of leg cramps or not.. but this works for me. It's worth a try. Good luck to you, hope you can find some relief.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
