I am having some back pain in my upper right side. Is anyone else experiencing this? It really hurts and I am unable to sleep or get comfortable at night.

I see my doctor on Thursday and I am just hoping that the pain goes away before then. I don't know if it is just gas or maybe I pulled a muscle when I was sleeping on my back. Oh well, so far this morning it is not bothering me.

Interesting this has question has come up...

I was banded on 6/30 and 3 weeks after the surgery the left side of my back started hurting pretty bad. I don't recall having pulled it funny. I asked my doctor and he said it was not related to the surgery...I wonder???:)

I was banded on 7-10-08. In the first two weeks, I also experienced some back pain. I didn't even say anything to my doctor cause I thought it was normal. Now I'm in my third week post-op and I haven't had any pain for a couple days. If you are that uncomfortable and can't sleep, that definitley sounds like a red flag to me. :confused2: I would get checked out. Good luck to ya and hope your feeling better soon!

I had back pain in about the same area that you described (just below my sholder blade and just to the right of my spine). I had this pain for about 3 months. I figured it had to do with the way I was sleeping. Since my surgery I had to change the way I slept. Before surgery, i tended to sleep on my stomach, and since that was a little difficult I must have been trying to sleep in a different position Causing different muscles to be used.

I also think that the pain may have been because of the weight loss and learning to use different muscles while my incisions healed. My work often has me sitting at my desk and I had to learn to hold my self up rather than slump. It has almost been 4 months since my surgery and I don't have that pain anymore.

Hopefully your pain isn't anything serious.

My pain has finally gone away. I do think it had something to do with the way I was sleeping right after surgery. I usually sleep on my stomach so it was a very different way to have to adjust to get comfortable.

Went to my doctor today and I am pain free. No more back pain.

I also have the same problem. I am day 3 post-op and I am sleeping on my couch because it gives my back more support. I just couldn't get comfortable on the bed. The first night I reallllly hurt my neck and back from sleeping the way I did, plus I have this theory it might be due to the fact I've been on all liquids...as my other muscles hurt and I was thinking maybe I wasn't getting enough Protein. I had my first Protein Shake, post-op, today and it went down great and I think it's actually helped with some of my muscle pains.

Hi:

I was banded the same day, and this afternoon, I started having real bad back pain. Having my kid try to massage it didn't work. Around midnight, I had a green apple two step to the bathroom, and now most of the pain is gone. I think most of this is gas fr the procedure.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
