September Banders,How long will you take off work?

Recommended Posts

My banding is on Tuesday the 2nd. I am planning on going back to work the next monday. If I feel up to it though, I'm going early. My surgery was scheduled so fast, I don't have the time to take off. But, I'm not giving this up for anything. The good thing is I am being banded at the hospital I work in. Wish me luck. It's going to be here soon... })i({

Wow!!! I am scheduled for Sept 10 and I just recieved an approved return to work date of Oct 8th. I get a whole month off. I get to use my sick time and this was the period of time that the doctor told my company I would need. I work for a very large corporation and we have a seperate company that handles employee sick leave. They are nitorous for bringing people back to work too early, so I was really suprised when i got a month. I am just glad I'll be out of the liquid phase when I come back to work!!

I wish everyone well!!!

I will be taking two weeks off to get comfortable and heal after my banding. My doc said that this should be enough time if everything goes smooth.

Welcome to the September Samurai! We have a great little group here.

After reading how much time you are all taking, maybe three days isn't enough. I am scheduled for surgery on Friday September 19 and I was going to return to work on Monday. I really started to get worried that I was pushing too har.

I finally got the nerver to speak to someone in HR, not the Top Dog, but someone close to her. She suggested that I also take Monday and Tuesday as scheduled vacation days. So as far as everyone in my office will know, Friday, Monday and Tuesday will be vacation days.

I will have my surgery on Friday and since it will be scheduled, if I don't feel better Sunday I can plan to take Monday and Tuesday off. If I feel up to it, I will just come in and say I was bored and cancel my remaining days. Since I have to cancel 99% of my vacation anyway (I am the Manager of the Department) no one will be the wiser. And I won't look bad asking for more time at the last minute.

I feel so much better knowing I have a little wiggle room :) And she told me it is no one's business except my own what I do on my vacation.:)

I just want to thank everyone for all their input. It is a hard decission especially when you have to work. And to make matters worse, My Husband's Company is closing, he is going to be 50 and out of a job. :( But at least it is my insurance and this surgery is not at risk. I am going to need my health more now than before. :( You know they say you never know what the future holds. I just didn't see this coming....... :)

i am having surgery september 11th...going back to work october 9th...i was so glad they are letting me off the whole month...i am having hiatal hernia repair as well...don't know how bad that is, but i am a nurse, and i was scared with all the walking and pulling, and lifting that it would make the port area hurt...but i will be getting off the liquids right after i go back to work...so i like that...our support group meetings have had a variety of time off...most being shorter time if it's office work and no lifting. high risk jobs, like a prison guard or psych ward, (in case someone hits or kicks them in the belly)...they get 4-6 weeks off...i had a terrible time with my GB surgery...took 3-4 weeks for me to quit hurting...but i went back to work 2 weeks afterwards, so did not want to take a chance...

I wanted to have surgery on a Thursday to return to work the next Monday but with they way their scheduled worked my surgery is Sept 16 (Tuesday) so I just plan on taking the rest of the week. I think that should be good. I wonder...I had a hiatal hernia (sp??) when I was 16 and have just lived with it. I wonder if the doc will fix it if he sees it. Hmmm...I'll have to ask him that.

My surgery is Sept 30th. I just make the cut off to call myself a September Samurai.... (At least all of you will be done by then and I can learn from you)

Since it is a Tuesday I plan on taking the rest of the week off then with the weekend I will have 6 days off. If I have to take more I will, but I would have to take LWOP. Besides my co-worker would freak out if she had to do more than four days without me.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
