September Banders,How long will you take off work?

Recommended Posts

Hi ya'll, how many days r u planning to take off from work after your surgery?

My surgery is scheduled for Tues. Sept 9th. I have taken off the 9-12. That gives me 4 work days and 2 weekend days before work the following Monday. So that is a total of 6 days. Is that enough time? I am also off on the Monday before surgery for labor day.

I have heard of people taking less time but I think the doc is going to fix a hiatal hernia during the surgery also(is anyone else getting a dual procedure?) so I wanted to be on the safe side.

My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday 9-17 and I am returning to work on Monday 9-22. I too my have a haital hernia repair, but I need to return to work. Dr K said I could return the next day if I felt good, since I had an office job. I have to make it work, I am using Vacation Days.

I am getting banded on Sept.3 (Wed.) and returning to work the following Monday. Sounds like we all pretty much have the same time frame in mind. I am going to Colorado for my surgery and will be staying until Sunday. I'm not sure how I'll feel so I thought the extra few days there might be good since I live in Florida. But then I have to come home Sunday and go right to work the next day.

Hi April,

I've asked that question too, and have heard that if you have a desk job you CAN go back in 3 days if you need to, but it is suggested that you take off a week if you have the time. That's my plan.

Tally,

OMG my date is also 9/3! Are you also with Dr. k? That would be too crazy. We could wave to each other going in and out of the OR.

Nora

I'm planning to take a week off. I've had two surgeries this year. When I had my g/b taken out I went to work one week later. It was kind of rough, but I did it because I was scheduled for my band in March and needed the time.

When March came around and I went in for surgery, the recovery was much, much easier than from the g/b. I think the only thing I might have to contend with is the new eating process.(This time, since I didn't have that issue the last time.) Of course, this is assuming that there are no complications. *knocks on wood*

But really, I can't see the band surgery being much worse that the g/b. So, like I said I plan to take a full week. (Surgery is on Monday so will be out until the following Monday.)

Tally, let me know how you do. I am worried about the liquids being at work, getting enough to drink. Looks like we have the same time frame, except I don't have to travel. I wish you well on that, going back to work after a vacation is hard enough.

I will keep all posted. I still have a month to go though. What is your date?

I am Sept 17, I had thought it was so far away, but now it seems closer and closer. Now it seems almost around the corner

I've organised my surgery so it coincided with my school holidays. I have 2 week off then. Just to get me in the swing of the new eating habits before the rush of teaching begins again.

Tally,

I sent you a private message - we have got to compare notes!!

I'm planning on taking 1 week off just to be sure I"m rested and ready to come back. I've heard you only need 3 days, but since I have the sick time banked, figured I should use it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
