Finally Banded after 3 years - A few problems

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone:

I'm 37 years old, from Buffalo, NY, and I was just banded on 7-17-08 in Mexico. I'm pleased with my decision to go to Mexico, I'm just wondering if anybody else has suffered from shingles following the surgery? I'm praying that this is not an indication that my body is rejecting the band. I'm responsive to the medication, but it seems to be taking forever and I'm itching like crazy...

Here is another question I have been wondering about: at what point have fellow lapband recipients resumed excercise activities? I started walking almost immediately, but I'm hesitant to head out to the health club. My doctor indicated that I was fine to do the treadmill, eliptical machine and the stationary bike anytime in the next 6 weeks, I'm paranoid about dislocating the band and aside from walking, I'm hesitating to do housework! I would welcome any and all feedback. Thanks!

Shingles are caused by the chicken pox virus. So I don't think would be a result of your surgery. Congrats on your band!

I have not suffered shingles but I can give you some info that will be helpful ( I am a nurse also) I have been banded for 2 years (i posted 3 but I meant 2) I have a auto-immune blood disease that has been in remission for 12 years. thought I was done with it, unitl I was banded...after that...my immune system crashed (lowered) because I wasnt getting enough nutriants....which is common when you are banded if you do not pay attention to your proteins...(I didnt) so that is why you are valnurable to diseases you have never had, your immune system is low....I had the liquid removed 1 year ago, gained back some weight yes...but my blood disease has (fingers crossed) went back into remisson so far....I am having it filled back up, wiser. smarter....to manage my nutriants....and take my Vitamins faithfully. hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
