protein shake during pre-surgery clear liquids?

Recommended Posts

K so I have like 3 days (july 29th) till my surgery. I'm just wondering if I will be able to drink my Protein Shake (made with water) during the 3 days of my Clear Liquids before my surgery...?

Hey! My surgeon's policy is Water based, no calorie/very low calorie liquids only. NO Protein Shakes. Basically anything your liver has to process....is a no no. BUT, there are sooooo many differences between surgeons. Just remember, the only reason they are making you do this, is to reduce your liver size...thus making for an easier surgery and easier recovery since they won't have to move your liver all over the place. Good luck!

FYI...clear liquids is just that...CLEAR. You can see through it. Jello, broth, sprite, pop cycle (if it melts at room temp to a clear liquid), lemonade, coffee (no cream), tea, juice, Water, soft drinks.< /p>

TY I understand "clear" liquids  I guess I was asking : if there is Protein Shakes being consumed now what kind of pre-op diet was being followed. Like so many days liquids and then so many days "clear" liquids. I'm sorry if I didn't make myself more understandable.

Hi there,

I just had surgery Tuesday, July 22nd. I feel great. Some advise, up until the day before surgery, you are on two Protein Shakes to replace Breakfast and lunch and then a sensible dinner (low-fat, low-carbs), this helps shrink your liver and fat around your stomach for surgery. I strongly advise to keep with the diet. It truly helped me recover faster. The day before surgery, you are on clear liquids (crystal light, sugar-free Jello, and broth), that's it. No Protein shakes, absolutely nothing you can't see through a glass. I suggest the less you take in the day before surgery, the better off you are. It helps you from becoming sick after the surgery and believe me, you don't want to be vomiting after surgery. The Dr. will give you every kind of medication to prevent it but you can still help by not taking in as much the day before. Hope this helps!

Me and my husband are getting banded on July 28th.. Our doctor instructed us to do Protein Shakes and clear liquids. We are doing both, shake for breakfast and dinner, broth throughout the day, as well as Water and crystal light. As stated before, each surgeon is different. Good luck.weight.png

They told me to just go on a low 600 cal a day diet, they said i could do the Optifast diet (which i dry reach at the taste really hate it) so im just having on of those a day at breakfast, a egg on toast for lunch and for tea i have a grilled steak or chicken breast and some salad, through out the day i munch on carrots and celery and raw mushrooms.

I hope im doing the right thing

I just had to stick to a 1500 cal diet, and not gain any weight before surgery. Which I haven't. And I'm sticking to everything clear, I just wanted to know if it would be alright to include my Protein Shake powder mixed with water...would be ok. I am supposed to be on this clear liquid diet for 2 days, but I added an extra day just for safe measure.

You should ask your surgeon about whether you can use the Protein Powder with Water. My surgeon didn't allow that during the clear liquids phase. Before my surgery, I asked him if I could use the Isopure Protein Drinks that come in bottles which are clear and he said those would be okay. Basically, clear liquids are just that, liquids you can see through. The only thing he included in the list that you couldn't see through is skim milk. I liked the Isopure drinks at first, but after 10 days of drinking them, I couldn't even look at an Isopure bottle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
