Hello! The fat has got to go away!

Recommended Posts

Hi. nice to meet you guys. I'm Sam. *waves* I live between Denver and Boulder in Colorado.

I've been thinking about surgery for a few years and my doc has been encouraging me to get it for at least 1.5 years now, and since the beginning of this year, I've been thinking more and more seriously about it and now I'm very serious. I'm looking at Dr. K. and Dr. Johnell as potential surgeons.

I keep hearing things about stomach erosion and people who end up having to gastric bypasses anyway because of the damage caused by Lap-Band and well, I've heard enough negative things that I'm a little nervous. But I still want to go for it. I have so many health issues and I'm mortified at how huge my body has become over the years. I feel miserable whenever I have to move. I went on a hike tonight, and you should have heard me huffing and puffing when I was only 1/3 of the way up a hill. I did make it to the top and was very proud of myself, but I haven't exerted myself that hard in years and it HURT! Of course, it feels good now, but still, if I were 160+ lbs lighter, it would have been so much easier. Now, where's the "huffing and puffing because I'm too fat!" emoticon...?

Anyway, I am here to learn more about the surgery and meet people who are in the same boat I am (or have been there before). nice to meet you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
