newly banded - horrible port pain

Recommended Posts

I am newly banded on 7/15/08 -gas pain is tolerable and really not much port pain, for the first week while I was off work. Now that I have been back to work for a week, at a job where I sit all day, the pain at my port site is getting worse instead of better. Has anyone else had this problem? I am wondering if it is from sitting all day, I do try to get up and walk around, but by the end of the day, I am back on the pain meds. Just wondering if this is normal, or if I may have a problem.

hey sweety ,

I was

banded on 7/18 . The port is the only place I really had pain also . But once i went back to work on tuesday 7/22 . I started feeling better .I do believe it is from sitting and not walkin around. Im a hairstylist so i stand allday . and have had a great week at work. But find myself over compensating and not standing up straight from the the port and incisions. so by the end of the day my back starts to hurt pretty good. I believe when they say walk as much as u can . They mean exactly that !!! If u would try at least once a hr for about 10 to 15 mins to get up and walk around im sure it would help not only the gas but stretch that area were the band is so u will get more comfort. People ak me does it hurt and the only thing i can say is the area where the port is attached is uncomfortable i think bc it is so close to ur skin . so u feel it more . But i hope u get to feeling better and wish u great sucess !! another suggestion is when u get up in the am go for a short walk get ur day started and stretch that area. then again lunch and after work . try and get up as much as u can . i have felt uncomfortable if i sit to long . Plus it helps get that dang gas out of u . That is so aggrevating to me !! Best of luck !!

Thanks for your thoughts. I was afraid it was probably from sitting since it didn't hurt until I went back to work. I will try to get up and walk more often and see if that helps. It will hopefully only get better from here.

When I was banded I remember thinking that something must be wrong because it hurt so bad. The pain did slowly go away but it took longer than I thought it would. Hang in there. You are not alone in having port pain. In fact sometimes I can still move just right and it feels sore where the port is.

I'm glad you asked this question, I was banded on 7/22 and my port site is sore as doo doo. no other pain except a little gas that I can handle. But was worried about the port no reddness or anything just sore and a little ache. if others are going through it to I guess it's normal, also still on pain meds.

I too have a job where I sit all day and most of my pain was around the port area. I found that if I wore a "shaper"/girdle it really eased the pain (not sure if that's ok - but, it definitely helped!!) I think that it helped to hold everything in place and the port didn't seem to "rub" against my suit pants.

If your interested it's the Kymar "New Body Shaper" - I like it b/c it breathes and stays in place all day - doesn't ride up a bit. Like a second skin...just firmer!

New Body Shaper Kymaro New Body Shaper - $39.95 : UbuyEZ, The Easy Place To Shop

Good Luck!!

I was banded on 7/8 and went back to work on 7/14 and I had the same increase in pain/soreness. What really bothered me were the staples. When I went to have them out it was like getting a whole new stomach! What a difference a day made, the following day I had NO pain/soreness at all.

This sounds normal, I would recommend taking liquid tylenol every 4 hours to stay ahead of the pain while working. Good Luck.

I was banded 7/15 and found that the pain at the port site lasted the longest. Even now sometimes when I bend a certain way or sit a certain way it feels like it's in a bind (?) or like it is pulling from the port site to my stomach? I just get up and walk around awhile and it seems to "stretch" itself back out...if that's the right way to describe it. Not sure if that is supposed to last or not...I will ask when I go back for my 2-week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
