The RN at my doctors office told me yesterday that the last two people who have had my insurance have had to do 6 months of doctor supervised dieting. When my insurance sent me the paper work about the surgery it did not say anything about having to do 6 months of doctor supervised dieting. I will be really upset if that is the case. Has this ever happen to anyone else?

I too have to have a 6 month doctor supervised diet. I was mad at first but it's given me the opportunity to develop better eating and exercise habits, and get my mind right about the entire process. The six months will fly by.

They didn't mention the 6 months to me either. But I had to do them. Still doing them I just started month 4. It's so worth it though because I am losing while on it. 20.5 lbs down. Less weight to lose after surgery!

It goes by quickly...amazingly.

I also had to do the 6 months weight loss program for my insurance company. It did go by fast. But we do have it pretty good because I heard that some insurance companies make people wait a year.

It is the strangest thing, this 6 month diet. I got a "approval number" from my insurance company. But the RN who gave it told my insurance contact that she had to give it to the Medical director to approve or deny without the 6 month diet. I ask her if I do have to do the 6 month diet is it in my best interest to lose weight and if so how much. She said I shouldn't lose too much or they will deny my surgery all together. Then why did they give me the approval if I still have to wait? I think it is the insurance companies way of hoping we get fed up (no pun intended ) and give up on the idea. Good luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
