Do any of you have trouble with rice and/or sushi?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I have been banded since January are am a slow loser. I had another fill today (am at about 4.5 out of 10 ccs or so) and am going to try some soft rice tonight, fresh from my rice cooker.

Since banded, I have had lots of rice and even sushi, as long as I chewed well.

Is this typical? Do most Bandsters do okay with rice? With sushi?

I'd love to hear your experiences!

Thanks!!!:biggrin2:

Hi. I can't eat sushi so I typically eat sashimi. It is really good for you and very high in Protein. I don't know if its the rice, seaweed combo or what. I can do white rice with the sashimi fine but sushi fills me up really really fast. My favorite food of all times. Enjoy.

7_5_142.gifIcann't do rice anymore. I have tried both white and brown rice. I miss it. But oh well. I would rather be healthier than eat the rice. Enjoy tour meal

I can eat very little rice and no sushi. I think it is the rice/seaweed combo that just won't go down so I just eat sashimi as often as I can!

I've only been banded since 7/10, but I've been wondering about sushi. One of my most favorite treats! :smile2: I had the gut feeling (no pun intended) that it wasn't going to be a go...oh well.

Rice is noted as a No-No for me do because 1) it swells, 2)it's starch & sticks like Pasta. Maybe later when you get closer to your goal, but as for now, take it slow. I have given myself more needless stomache aches!

Thanks for all of your comments. It is interesting to see how others have managed the same foods (or not managed!).

I was able to eat some soft rice tonight...put a little Tomato sauce on it to keep it extra moist. I chewed like crazy and it was fine. So, I guess with this current fill level, it may be okay. I'll see about sushi/sashimi and I think that as long as I eat slowly and chew well, it may be okay - based on how I feel tonight with the rice.

It's funny how each of us has very different experiences.:biggrin2:

The first time I tried sushi after having lapband surgery it just didn't seem right, somehow. I wasn't very restricted, but it didn't taste as good as it used to.

It doesn't bother me at all! It's just like bread - I used to love it but now it just doesn't appeal at all.

I can manage a bite or two of rice or bread, but that's it.

I had sushi for dinner tonight. I ordered 1 roll and was able to eat a grande total of 2 pieces. It was the kind with the rice on the outside. It wasn't because it was hard to eat, I took several bite for each piece (used to just pop them whole into my mouth) and I chewed till everthing was liquid. I was FULL when I was done though. I had the 2 pieces and the cup of broth they give you at the japanese restaurant. Pretty funny, huh? Anyway, I too didn't enjoy it the way I used to. It was almost too much work and everything seemed SO SALTY to me. I guess it is because I have only been eating 'real' food for a day or so now and wasn't really eating a lot of salt post -op, but wow - they put a lot of salt in the food that is for sure!

I have no problem what so ever with sushi and I'm 8 months out. I LOVE it. I thought the sticky rice would trip me up, but if I chew really well, it's fine. I tend to like avocado in my rolls, so that keeps it slippery so it goes down a bit easier I guess. After banding, you will have to try ALL foods a few times before you can determine if anything will affect you personally. Everyone is different, and different times of day are different, your time of the month can affect it. It just a day to day experience.

Sushi was my biggest and first PB. It's the seaweed come to find out.

Sashmi does much better.

However rice is a tricky, not very nurtrious food. I've had issues with Mexican rice and plain old white rice. I don't know why I keep on trying, you'd think I'd learn!

I do love Japanese food...I just eat sukiaki and other things now.

OMG rice is my enemy; long, brown, short, white, it doesn't matter. I have never PB'd before...that is until I had the pleasure of eating rice. The stupid thing is I had to do it two more times before I got a clue. Go figure.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
