Should I get the lap-band?

Recommended Posts

I am looking into getting banded but have my reservations about doing it right now. My husband and I want to have a baby soon but I am not sure how safe or unsafe it is to become pregnant soon after getting banded. I have read that you should wait at least a year but has anyone gotten pregnant soon after getting their band? If so, how did your pregnancy go? I appreciate any help I can get!:smile2:

I read on a forum or someplace about a woman that was banded and lost wt I think she had only been banded for 4 or 5 mo every thing turned out fine.

When pregnant they unfill the band til after you have the baby then they start the fills again.

Some women do the band in order to help get pregnant.

you can google lap band and pregnant for info

Hi.. I just got banded today and one of the main reasons I got the band is that it you can have a safe preg. my daughter is 10 months old and I know some people say their docs tell them to wait but I guess it just depends on if you are at a healthy enought wait.. I heard someone at our clinic was banded 2 months and got preg.. they just opened the band and she will get fill after the baby comes..

good luck and I say its worth it.. even though I am not the most comfortable right now

I believe that it's safe to get pregnant with the band (they can totally deflate it so you can eat a lot. Also, if you lose weight it's easier to get pregnant. One other benefit is that you can use your band to control your weight during pregnancy, you know, if you started to gain way too much weight as I hear some pregnant women who are prone to obesity do. It's better to wait until you are really stable with the band.

My surgeon required me sign a statement that I wouldn't get pregnant for 2 years from my surgery date. I am 34 and don't have any kids yet so waiting until I'm 36 is a bummer, but I truly believe I'll have a healthier pregnancy (and a healthier baby) if I'm at a healthy BMI before I get pregnant.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
