Does anyone else's weight flex between 4 & 5 lbs a day

Recommended Posts

I have been dieting and losing slowly but I am one of those people that weighs myself several times a day. I have noticed that my weight flexes between 3 & 5 lbs between times I weigh myself. I have been going by my morning weight but was wondering if this is normal. I got up this morning and weighed myself but when I got done working out at the gym I was up 5lbs. I am trying to make my weigh in so I can get my surgery date, this is all driving me crazy. I know I shouldn't be obsessed with the scale but I am and my appointment is this coming Tuesday but in the afternoon.

Yes, my weight varies by as much as 5 pounds from day to day....that's why I don't put too much stock in the scale.

I'll look at an average over a week or two and then I get a feel for what I've lost................or not.

I weigh myself every morning and have started weighing nightly too. Anyways.... I have noticed twice now (at a.m. weigh in) I have jumped 4-5 pounds. The first time I lost it and then some, this time.... time I will tell. I don't understand the cause but interesting to hear some one out there other then me has had the same problem.

I don't weigh myself everyday, I was told by my PCM that the body fluctuates in weight during the day due to Water retention or elimination, whether or not a meal has been eaten or not eaten, salt intake, how much Water has been drunk, hormones.......I was told to weigh once a week at the same time and on the same day.

If you have to weigh more than I suggest doing it in the morning upon waking and not again till the next morning.

After all why drive yourself crazy, for so long I let the scale rule what kind of day I was having....... it can become obssesive.....I know!!!

I will occassionally weigh myself throughout the day, but I ALWAYS weigh myself before bed and when I wake up and its 99% of the time a 2 pound loss in the morning compared to night before. If I do happen to weigh myself during the day it is usually around 3-4 pounds more. Very frustrating!

It's completely normal to have that much of a fluxuation. I only weigh in the morning to get my true weight.

I would also encourage you to weigh once a week instead of several times a day/week as you will drive yourself crazy. :smile2:

stop weighnig yourself so many times a day... of course your weight goes up and down during the day... You will only drive yourself crazy. I weigh myself once per week.

Hi MamaL,

Your post caused me to actually register so I could respond. Thanks :smile2: I've been lurking for a few days and hadnt actually registered yet. To answer your question I think it's pretty normal 3-5lbs a day easily due to Fluid and intake throughout the day. As I see some others saying it's not really healthy to weigh yourself several times a day or even daily. Most programs recommend a maximum of once I week I believe.

My question to you and to anyone else who reads this is in regards to something else you mention... "getting your weight down so you can have your surgery". What? Is there a MAX that you can be overweight in order to get the surgery? If so, I'm probably in trouble.

My insurance requires me to lose 5% of my body weight. I made this once and had surgery scheduled for June 30th, went into have my surgery and was up by about 8lbs so DR cancelled my surgery and had me see another DR in her clinic who put me on a liquid diet for 4 weeks and told me I have to lose 30lbs before surgery. I tried to find another DR in my area but insurance only approves this DR. So here I am trying to lose 30lbs. I have already got past my insurance requirement so I'll see what what they say when I go in on Tuesday. Just to clarify I orginally lost 17lbs to meet insurance requirement then gained 8lbs of that back.

Is this due to risk factors? And can I ask how many pounds you have to lose? I feel like I would be doing awesome to lose 167# but the Ideal Weight Charts say I should lose 182#'s just to hit the MAX weight for my height.

My weight goes up + down during the day. I used the Hospital for pre-op weight. I use the Surgical Weight Control Centers scales for Forums. I weigh in a least 1 time a week. Most of us at clinic weigh each meal 4 oz. or less 3 meals a day. liquids count too! I think its important to be known at your local clinic. Your 3 times more successful at weight loss attending support groups. Measure inches every 6 months. I keep track of weight & inches at Realize. I only have 6 months with my Realize Band but I've seen a number of people scared of the scales. They are just a tool like the band. In the book it says "This is not rocket Science". Lost morbid obesity & 120 pounds since 1/15/08 & No going back. No Fills. To ignorant to put ticker on this page. Good Luck, Hasta Pronto, :smile2: George

Yes your weight fluctuates. Every thing you eat "weighs" something. If you weigh your self first thing in the morning then drink 8 oz of Water and weigh again you will weigh more. First thing in the morning is the best time but stop making yourself crazy by weighing every day. Remember sodium also will make you hold water and weigh more. Best of luck.

I was required to lose 15# before Kaiser would preform my lap band surgery. They explained that it helps shrink your liver and makes the surgery easier for the doctor to preform. I have a feeling that they also want to make sure you have some kind of discipline and an idea of how much of an effort you're willing to put forth.

My weight fluctuates 3-5 lbs a day also, and has always done that. I have to force myself not to weigh in everyday. I can understand why you are right now with worries about the weigh in for surgery. My doctor is known for canceling surgery due to a weight gain.. My last appointment with my regular dietician I had gained 3 lbs and was devastated.

Hang in there and watch your sodium intake,, I went back to salt sense and can already see a difference,,, (and it tastes good)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
