Help! Need advise on son's band.

Recommended Posts

hello, My 19 y/o son was banded on Monday July 21. He did really well after the first day and is feeling good now. My problem is that he absolutely will not drink anything but Water and the Isosure liquid drinks. He doesn't like any kind of broth or Soup or the carnation instant Breakfast. When he smells them he gags. He will get hungry in the evening, but still won't eat. I am worried about him not getting enough calories. He is taking water well. What do you suggest for the rest of the liquid phase and the mushy phase? He also hates eggs. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! :confused2:

he can have Jello Water, or maybe some decaffe tea...skim milk, don't worry about him not wanting anything..that is normal...just let him take it slow and easy for a few days and he will be able to tolerate more liquids...just be sure to drink slowly..do not gulp...

Good luck to him ...I hope that his recovery is a fast one...

Does he like any kind of juice? I poured the Isopure fruit Punch over crushed ice with some cranberry juice. It helped the taste and texture. Some people just can't stand that texture. (oops, I didn't notice that he will drink the isopure! That's good! It's good Protein and he really doesn't need anything else at this point.)

Have you tried some of the slimfast Low Carbs drinks or the Atkins? I'd take him to the store and tell him to find stuff that he'll drink. Allow him to drink anything he wants. At this point, the important thing is that he heals and allows the band to set properly around his stomach.

Tell him that calories don't matter at this point, because they truly do not. It's more important to stick with the liquids and allow healing. He's 19 years old and he is now banded. He's going to have to start being responsible for himself and his nutrition. With some guidance from you, I think it will work. But you might have to push him to get serious about finding and trying some other things.

Good Luck!

As long as he's getting plenty of Water, I wouldn't worry too much. He's drinking Isopure, so he's getting Protein. There is also milk, sugar free popsicles, and Jello. For the mushy stage there's pudding, yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, any kind of Soup is good. There are tons of cream based Soups, surely there's one he likes out there. If it's a chunky soup, just puree it or mash it up really fine. Right now is a healing time and this is only his 3rd day post-op. As long as he isn't getting dehydrated he's fine.

I was on Clear Liquids for 4 days and had the Isopure..... The Isopure is good for him and has all his Protein needs and he is drinking Water so that is also good.

I was also told to progress only as tolerated to the next phases...not to rush it so if he feels he needs a few more days on clear then that should be fine......you can check with his surgeon if there are any other concerns..... But it seems like he is doing fine.......

As has been said, right now what he is doing is fine. He will get to a point in his healing, where he can have other things and will want other things. Right now, he is doing great keeping it Clear Liquids, and allowing that band to seat itself without interuption!!

I understand your concern, but as long as he remains hydrated, and he is getting some Protein and nutrition from the Isopure, he will be fine. If in 2 weeks he still will not take in anything, then I would intervene! Although that might be easier said than done if your 19 year old son is anything like mine was at that age!!!

Good Luck to your son----and to you as you manuever your way through this with him!!!

I was banded on the 2nd and couldn't think about drinking anything but Water and some apple juice my first 3-4 days. I wouldn't worry about it. The desire for a variety of tastes and textures will come back soon enough. For now, he needs to be really taking it easy, letting his body heal and listening to it. It will let him know when it's time to take the next step.

Hey thanks for all the advise. I have backed off and am just letting him listen to his own body. He is drinking Water and Isosure well and last night drank about 1/4 cup of Carnation sf breakfast shake. He said he was starting to get pressure in his chest and so he stopped. He walked alot and seems like his old self. His only complaint is some nagging shoulder pain, but tylenol takes care of it. Isn't it amazing how young people recover?! I really appreciate the feedback and I am sure I will be back to this site alot in the future!:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
