jpell1275 0 Posted July 24, 2008 Hye everyone, i was just banded Monday the 21st. Since then i have had horrible bloating and gas pains. Everyone says that this is normal( hope it doesnt last long). Obviously im still on liquids and really dont feel like eating anyhow. I am a little concerned on why i gained 5 lbs during surgery and when it will come back off. I am also surprised to see how many people state that they dont lose for the first 5 weeks because it is a healing time? My Doc didnt tell me that ... is it common? One of my wifes good friends had been banded now for 10 months and has lost 81 lbs w/ no issues, so you can see why i am confused a bit. Right now he has me drinking 3 Atkins shakes and nothing else but Clear Liquids. I can not see how i would not lose weight.... i dont know ..... if there is anyone that would be able to shed some light on how this is gonna go, it would be appreciated. I work with alot of guys who have had the Gastric and loose weight very quick .. almost too quick ....What should i expect ???
christafin 0 Posted July 24, 2008 I was banded on Monday as well and have been feeling horrible gas pains too. But today, is MUCH better. I used a new antacid called ULTRA XCID - it's like yogurt consistancy and seemed to get things moving really well.
clayverde 2 Posted July 24, 2008 Hi - I was just banded on Monday the 21st as well! Congratulations!! As to your post, I am so with you!! I weighed myself yesterday and I was so upset - I had gained 10lbs!! How is that even possible??? I weighed myself the night before surgery and had lost a total of 18lbs on the pre-op diet. Then yesterday I'm 10 lbs heavier!! Not only that, I am not on shakes or anything. I am on strictly clear liquids. So I really can't see how it is possible for me to have gained weight. My husband told me that it is very possible with swelling and all that is what the difference is and that right now I shouldn't worry about weight loss anyway. Which IS what the nurses and doctors told me. They have stated over and over that the first six weeks are all about healing and adjusting to the band. That is why, on my diet at least, the first six weeks are a gradual diet transition. From clear liquids, to full liquids, pureed, mashed, soft and then normal diet. So I wouldn't really worry about the weight issue yet. And as for the gas pains, I recently started a whole new thread called painful gas because the gas pains and bloating are so bad and I was concerned that it wasn't normal AND I wanted to know if I could do something to get rid of it. Which, by the way, nothing has. I have walked, Gas X, different positions to move it around and as of yet, nothing has been completely successful - although some have given me a little relief. Good luck with everything!!!

littlebit181818 0 Posted July 25, 2008 Hi all. I am so happy to hear that others have had some weight gain immediately after surgery. I too was surprised to find I gained 6 pounds when I was only consumming about 500 calories each day in the form of clear liquids. I can see the swelling in my tummy so it must be there. I was banded on July 22, 08. I has been a fairly easy process so far. Good luck to all.
boos02 0 Posted July 25, 2008 I was banded July 21 as well. The weight gain is from the fluids pumped into you during surgery and recovery. They will come off. As for not losing during the first 5 weeks, it was explained to me that because there is limited restriction some people go back to eating normally and that puts back on the lbs until the first fill. As for me, if I could just get over the gas pains I would be fine!
maguirre67 0 Posted July 25, 2008 i was banded june 30th when they weighed me at the hospital 1 was 245 but my scale said 248 im not at 238.8 and yes i gained five pounds right after surgery but lost it
odizzydori 0 Posted July 25, 2008 The gas pain will subside over time. The more your walk the better. So about every hour take a stroll through you house or your yard. This also helps to keep you body from getting stiff and sore. A heating pad will also help with it. Keep in mind you dont have hardly any restriction right now so it is possible to gain alot of weight during the next few weeks as you go backa to solid food. After you get back on solid food eat a high protien low carb diet. Watch portion size as well. I was advised by my doc, no bread, no rice, no Pasta, no potatoes and no fruits. All are high in carbs, eat meat, fish, chicken, seafood and green veggies. Anything out side of the meat and veggies count the carbs and if you keep it 30 or below you will lose weight. I have been doing this since January 2008, banded since April 21st, 2008 and I have lost 71lbs total. 31 since my operation. Good luck to you all.
