First Consultation...I left feelin horrible

Recommended Posts

So I have been waiting for this momment and when It finally came and I had I left feeling hopeless. I had my first consultation with Dr. Roslin from Lenox Hill Hospital he was highly recommended. I attended the seminar back in may and decided to go with lap band surgery. I have been exicted to finally make up my mind and go through with it. then I go to the consultation today and he barely looked at my files. and then he asked me what surgery I was going to have I said the lap band and he said "I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW MOST OF MY PATIENTS LIKE YOU AFTER A YEAR ARE NOT SATISFIED BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T LOST A GREAT DEAL OF WEIGHT" Then he says "I CAN SEE THIS HAPPENING WITH YOU" I didn't know what to say!! mind you he didn't ask me questions he didn't say much to me he just came out and said that. He says you'll have better outcome with the D. Swith, I said I didn't like the risk involved, he said everything has risks, but that over alonger period in his oppion the D. Switch would be best for people like you. "but I'm not telling you what surgery to have" I couldn't believe my ears. I'm 5'3 and 255 pounds what does he mean people like me......I know it's a tool that can help you to lose weight, I know it's not a miracle cure I've been doing my research for 2 years. then everything last about 2 min he starts talking in his tape recorder about me and in his recorder he talks about he explained all risks and that I want lap band surgery. he didn't explain anything he didn't explain how long I was going to be in there. about the procedure even though I know mostly about it he was just very arrogant I can't believe this I waited so long for this day to get stepped on.......... I don't know what to do now I feel so hopeless.....he was just in and out of the room in a flash. I sat there with a lump in my throat ready to cry I got home and let it out and then ate as usual I feel horrible.... please help me!!!!:):frown::frown:

It seems like what he said was true, he just said it in a mean way. I weighed 250 at surgery over 4 months ago. I have lost 55 pounds. I do get frustrated because those who have gastric lose weight quickly. My mother had gastris 3 months age weighed 20 pounds more than, and we both weigh the same today. It is frustrating but I did not want gastric, and the lapband is working for me. Find another doctor just because he was good for other people does not mean he will work for you.

I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience. I also had a very similar experience with the nurse practitioner at the doctor's office where I was banded. I finally decided that she is just a person with no communication skills, and doesn't understand that the people who are coming to see them have been talked down to and berated for years, and that hasn't been of any assistance to us up until this point and won't be now. I would maybe find another doctor? Or decide that most of your support will come from others at the office or through forums like this? I finally decided that getting the surgery was more important than getting along with this particular NP. I also believe that some of my emotional scars from the past experiences I have had regarding my weight maybe made me have this reaction to her. I am so sorry this was such a disappointing experience for you.

I'm sorry you had to go thru that. Some dr's can be real assholes. Is there anyway you can go see another surgeon? You want someone that will encourage you along the way on this journey. Good Luck!! Hang in there.

I know how you feel. I found a dr. I wanted to do my surgery. My insurance would not cover it even if I went on a weight loss program. So, I went to a cheaper surgeon that had been recommended to me from my ABGYN (at my yearly check up). They were so discouraging and were the same way. In stead of helping they just wanted to push gastric sleeve. I told them I wanted the other and I was told I did not know what I was talking about and obviously did not know the risks...HELLO, like you I had done my research. I was in tears and at wits end when I contacted Be-Lite. I am not saying that is for everyone but it has been a pleasant experience for me. I will be banded this Friday July 25. Good Luck and don't let one doc. ruin your dreams. God bless!

Absolutely look for another doctor. You will have a long term relationship with your bariatric surgeon and his office and this was an unacceptable and inappropriate manner with how he treated you.

Good luck!

I am sorry to hear your experience! That is aweful to be treated like that. He needs to realize that surgery is a last resort to everything else we have tried to lose weight. I would absolutely change dr's and I would tell them why. He needs to know he is affecting people like this. He shuld be ashamed of himself. Some dr's just don't have any bedside manner. You shoudn't let him make you feel hopeless......you sound like you have alot of hope to want to take this step to get healthy and happy. I wish you luck. Just remember, there are alot of dr's out there.......get another one.Just think of it as getting another opinion.

What a horrible experience! Find another doctor. I researched and thought seriously about it for a year. I finally asked my cardiologist what he thought and he was very encouraging. He did explain that eating habits still have to change but he stressed it was a great tool. I then asked my OB/GYN about it and he said he encouraged me to do it. He said it was much safer and healthier than bypass and knowing my weight history he thought it would be great for me. I believe a doctors support is very important. You deserve better!

hi there i am 5'3" and i am scheduled to be banded in september- you have to like your doctor-trust him be confident in him/her etc. i did not like the first specialist i went to - i am not having surgery with him surprise surprise- i am having surgery with a doctor that listed to me - and we made the decesion together on the lap band- that is the surgery i wanted to begin with. there are other doctors out there. i would be concerned if a doctor is pushing one procedure over another without discussion or reasoning-

Go forth immediately to NYU Program for Surgical Weight Loss. I did a huge amount of research and in a fit of overkill went to three seminars at different places to assist my decision. Drs. Christine Ren-Fielding, George Fielding and Marina Kurian at NYU are the best. They actually listen to you, and feel that the Lap Band is the best choice for most people, though they do all variants of gastric bypass. Between the three I think they have done over 8,000 bands. I have had wonderful people on my side there and cannot recommend Dr. Kurian enough. I started with them in March and I will be having surgery on July 31, 2008. Call them today and try another consult. I think you will be well pleased. :)

thanks I have been thinking of NYU, I can't believe Dr. Roslin, he was so insensitive and to think he's the chief over there. Anyway things happen for a reason. Do you think I have to do a seminar again even though it was not with NYU? I'll call them early tomorrow morning. Dr. Kurian is the only one that excepts HIP so she'll have to be the one that I have the surgery with.

We can all tell you what to do do but you know what?

I'd what my big ass back into that Dr's office and tell him that as his patient you didn't appreciate that.

I'm gonna be frank, that guy is obviously an Ahole who thinks his stuff don't stink and that "you people" will just sit and take it.

It not any different than getting bad service from Wal Mart or a restaurant. Let him know how you feel, then tell him your doing it anyways and that HE should really be the one doing his homework.

After one year many have said they thought they'd lose more, and on average you do lose less than those that go with gastric bypass... But years down the line you will be much better off.

MAN stories like this tick me off...

He's prolly some lil Indian dude with a beamer huh? :-) Jerk!!!!!

I'm not sure if you'll have to do the seminar again. The only advice I will give you is that you get the names of the people you talk to in the office. They have a large office staff and it's important to keep track of who's working on what for you. Dr. Kurian's patient coordinator is Nilsa, very experienced woman, and she has been very helpful through this process.

Lap Banding is a Tool. I have two friends who have done it. One lost a fraction of the weight she needed to lose - because she did not change her eating choices, instead relied on the Band to be a cure for her obesity. My other friend has been banded for a year, She had over 100 pounds to lose and is about 50lbs from goal. She, too, is short and knew that she would lose weight slowly but she didn't want a more invasive surgery. She decided that she could either be more overweight or less overweight in the future and she didn't want the former option.

Good luck on your journey and keep me posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
