Anyone with ibs, diverticulosis?? Did lap band help??

Recommended Posts

I have had diverticulosis since I was a very young.. My mother and some of my siblings also. Because of it I have had to eat a high Fiber diet and wondered if the lap band will make a difference. The IBS is pretty constant too if I don't eat right.. I know I can ask these questions at the doctors but would like to hear some personal responses.. It would be great to be rid of those episodes of pain and nausea and lose weight.

I was already excepted into the program and they have my medical history. They won't except you if you have chron's, or bowel resections. I am in the northeast also and was concerned about the intestinal issues so was straight forward with them about it.

I have IBS and was banded on July 16 2008. Right now I am on full liquids still so not sure how I will react.

I do know that because of that I was not able to have the bypass. if thats the procudure I wanted. I think it depends on the Dr. more than anything.

Have you asked a Dr. about this issue.

Good Luck

I have talked to my PCP about it, but not the surgeon yet. I would think that it would get better with better eating habits, and not overeating?? I have been seeing a nutritionist for a few months and just the changes I have made with that I have not had a spell for a long time. One thing that really concerns me is getting dehydrated, that will bring it on fast, along with kidney stones.. I always have a bottle of Water at hand so that will not be a big change for me.

I so want to be healthy..

I have IBS and was banded last Thursday. I haven't had any problems and amazing when I was doing 1 meal and 5 low carb/fat shakes a day that the nutritionist prescribed I didn't have any problems with IBS either.

I have dierticulosis and have had 3 bowel resections from perf's. I was banded in Apr and have had no problems. I have added my metamusil caps back and I use ground flax as an additional fiber. Just be sure to take some stool softners a few days before and several days after to combat the constipations from the pain meds. I really don't know why this would keep you from lapband surgery, maybe the bypass. Let me tell you it will be much better to be a 150#'s and have bowel surgery then over 300#'s. A whole lot less risky. Any one can perf a tic anytime so this is a much better choice. If you were "eating" all your fiber before you will probably have to switch to something like psyllium husks etc to get enough now. An added plus is the liquid diet gives your bowel a break and let's it rest more. I only had to have liquids for 5 days. I have had absolutely no problems with this since my surgery.

Thanks for the replies.. I was pretty confident that it would be okay because I was pre-approved medical wise, but I'm so siked for this now after months of thinking about it I don't want any brick walls. Its good to hear that some of the symptoms go away.. Being constipated is horrifying for me after going the other way for so long,, stool softeners are a must... TMI huh?? lol, there isn't much you don't discuss openly when it comes to this huh? I don't think I have ever shared my weight with people as much as I have in the past month.. I even braved adding a ticker,, now hopefully it will start moving huh?

I have been on a salad bender for about two months, now eating lots of yogurt and fruit trying to prepare myself for the new eating habits.. I haven't had IBS symptoms since I started, and the reflux is getting better also, and I have been sleeping better too!! I hope my motivation continues and the hunger or urge to eat goes away!

I have suffered with IBS my whole life...I was banded June 3, 2008 and my IBS switched from mostly loose and explosive to constipation....remember, drink, drink, drink, and use stool softners---you'll be fine, its the best decision I've ever made...I was down 33 lbs. at my 6 week check up and feel better than i have in years!

I have diverticulosis, they said surgery would be fine. I should be having surgery in November.

I was never once told by my surgeons office that I couldn't have surgery because of it.

I am in West Virginia.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
