Hi...

I'm a newbie and curious, what do they consist of? Cardiology...dietary....and psychiatry??What do they need to ask?

What other pre-op testing is involved?

Thanks

Think it depends on what your insurance requires..I could be wrong though. I had to do: cardiology clearance, psych eval, nutrition eval, pulmonary function test + clearance from pulmonary dr., sleep study, chest x-ray, UGI dysmotility, and blood work (don't know the specifics). I hope I was some help. Good luck in your journey!

I had to do:

  • Two visits with the psych in surgeons office (one filling out psych test, one reviewing results and asking questions)
  • Two visits with the nutritionist in surgeons office (one one-on-one visit to discuss my eating habits and one classroom style visit to go over pre-op and post op diets and discuss when and how to eat etc.)
  • Barium Swallow Test at the Radiologist (in my opinion the worst part--that barium stuff you have to swallow sucks  but I survived it!)
  • Blood work, EKG and Sugical Release with family doctor (all in one visit)
  • Sleep study was optional--I didn't have any symptoms of apnea so I didnt' do it.
  • Then a pre-op visit with the surgeon a week before surgery where he reviewed the results of all the above and discussed details of the upcoming surgery.

Everywhere is different.

I had to attend 2 info sessions, 1 of them I had to attend before my first appointment in the program. The 2nd one before I met with the surgeon.

I then had to have a meeting with the nurse, medical director, nutritionist, pysch(only lasted 10 mins), gallbladder ultrasound.

Then they met and decided if I was a good candidate and then met with the surgeon and got my date.

My mom is also going through this and had to do a breathing test on top of all of that.

My first appt was june 17th and my surgery is aug 11th.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
